South Dakota State scored five runs on 10 hits and got a stellar pitching performance by Pam Nicholson in a 5-0 win over North Dakota on Wednesday, but the SDSU bats went cold in Game 2, as UND hit four homeruns in a 6-0 win.
The split gives the Jackrabbits an 11-40 record heading into the final series of the season against Oakland this weekend. UND ends the day with a 17-33 record.
SDSU scored an unearned run in the first inning to go up 1-0, where the score stayed until the fifth inning, when the Jacks plated two runs on four hits to go up 3-0. A pair of North Dakota errors allowed the Jacks to score two more in the sixth to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
Nicholson took care of the rest, giving up just three hits in the complete game shutout, striking out eight and walking two in the win.
Ashley Durazo led the SDSU offense with a 3-for-4 game at the plate, with two RBI and two runs scored. Allison Huffman finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
North Dakota scored single runs in the first and third innings of the nightcap, and then put the game away with four runs on a trio of homeruns in the top of the seventh inning, including a second homer from leadoff hitter Caralyn Chewning, to secure the 6-0 win.
Kori Seidlitz took the loss for the Jacks in Game 2, while Emma Gronseth went the distance for NDSU, giving up just four hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Friday with a doubleheader against Oakland at noon, in a game previously scheduled for 2 p.m.
