The South Dakota State cross country programs are ready to compete at the 2016 NCAA Midwest Region Championship this Friday in Iowa City, Iowa.

The event will be hosted by the University of Iowa at Ashton Cross Country Course. The women's 6K will take place at 11 a.m., while the men's 10K race will begin at Noon. The weather for Friday is expected to be sunny with a high of 55 degrees.

The Jackrabbit men, ranked No. 6 in the Midwest Region, had their best-ever finish at the Midwest Regional a year ago, finishing sixth. The SDSU women finished 17th at last years regional, and enter the meet unranked in the Midwest region.

The fields will feature some outstanding competition. The SDSU men will be in competition with nationally-ranked No. 9 Oklahoma State, who has won at least a share of the Midwest Region title in 10 of the past 11 years. Other nationally-ranked teams competing on the men's side include No. 13 Iowa State and No. 23 Tulsa. The Jackrabbit women will be facing off against No.12 Iowa State, who has won five of the past six regional titles, in addition to last seasons Midwest Region champion No. 17 Oklahoma State and No. 26 Minnesota. Missouri, Tulsa and Oklahoma also received votes in the latest national poll.

The Jacks will be competing for an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday, Nov. 19. The top-two teams from each of the nine regional championship sites receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. In addition to the 18 bids won at the regional championships, 13 teams will be picked as at-large selections by the NCAA selection committee on Nov. 12. Individual runners can also qualify for the NCAA championships. The NCAA selection committee selects the top four individual performers within the top 25 in each region that were not on a team that qualified to compete at the NCAA Championships.

The Jackrabbits have competed at the NCAA Midwest Region Championships each year since 2008. The SDSU men cam in sixth in 2015 for their best-ever finish, while the women's top finishes came in 2012 and 2013 when they finished 15th.

SDSU enters the meet after successful showings at The Summit League Championships. The Jackrabbit men won The Summit League title after placing 6 runners in the top 10. On the women's side,
Emily Donnay took home the Jacks first individual league title and championship MVP, and
Rachel King and
Emily Berzonsky each added outstanding performances for first-team all-league honors. Coach
Rod DeHaven was named The Summit League Men's Coach of the Year.
