The South Dakota State softball team opened the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday on a beautiful day in Brookings, but the outcomes did not look nearly as good as the weather, as the Jackrabbits dropped both games in a doubleheader against Kansas City by the scores of 4-2 and 10-1.

The losses drop the Jackrabbits to 14-26, while the Kangaroos improve to 16-18.

The 'Roos broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning of the opener, scoring two runs on two hits, only to see that lead evaporate with one swing of the bat in the bottom half of the inning, as Lauren Chirnside hit a two-run home run off the scoreboard to tie the game at 2-2 after four innings.

UMKC got one run back in the top of the fifth and then added an insurance run that it wouldn't need in the seventh to secure the 4-2 win.

The visitors also scored first in the nightcap, plating four runs in the third to take the early lead, and then added one more in the fourth to go up 5-0 after four complete.

The Jacks capitalized on a Lyndsey Crist leadoff double in the fifth to score one run on a Baily Janssen sacrifice fly, but the Kangaroos put the game away with five runs in the seventh to secure the sweep.

SDSU looks to rebound this weekend, when the Jacks host Summit League favorite North Dakota State in a three game series, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
