MEET 5: South Dakota State at Arturo Barrios Invitational and Platte River Rumble |
BROOKINGS, SD – The South Dakota State men's and women's cross country teams will split for two meets on Friday as they head south to Texas and Nebraska.
Action will first start on Friday at College Station, Texas for the Arturo Barrios Invitational. The men's 8k kicks off at 8:30 a.m. while the women's 6k race will follow at 9:15 a.m.
SDSU will also be participating in the Platte River Rumble, hosted by both Omaha and Creighton. Competition will begin at 1 p.m. with the women's 6k race.
These meets will serve as opportunity for athletes to get a look at different competition from across the country or get in additional marks before the conference meet on Oct. 28.
LAST TIME OUT:
The South Dakota State women's cross country team finished fifth overall while two Jackrabbits competed in the men's 8k at the Briar Cliff Invitational on Saturday morning at the Adams Nature Preserve.
Emma Gonzalez led the women in the 6k with her 16
th place finish and personal best time of 22:22.6 as teammate
Emma Ecker finished close behind in 19
th place with a time of 22:40.3.
Nina Dawson was next for SDSU as she clocked a PR of 22:48.4 for 22
nd place and
Jenna Soine finished 36
th in a personal best 23:05.7 for 36
th.
Kadense Dooley rounded out the scoring runners in 50
th place with a time of 23:28.4.
Also competing for SDSU were

The Jackrabbit women finished fifth in the team standings with 134 points.
On the men's side, two athletes competed in the 8k and finished in the top 80 out of 217 competitors.
Mason McDonald finished 44
th with a time of 26:05.5 while Andrew Moeller took 78
th in 26:53.3.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: The Week three Division I cross country rankings decided by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association were announced Oct. 2
nd with the Jackrabbit men jumping one spot to 8
th in the Midwest region while the women fell one spot to 14
th.
SDSU MEN PICKED FIRST, WOMEN SECOND IN PRESEASON POLL: The SDSU men were chosen to continue their streak of Summit League championship titles while the women were picked second following a 2022 season that saw a record seventh-straight title for the men and second place finish for the women.

- Clocked an 8K time of 24:36.6 at the Weiss-Crockett Invitational
- Finished third at the Augustana Twilight with a four-mile time of 19:19.8
Daniel Burkhalter, South Dakota State
Sr. | Prairie City, S.D.
- Took second place at the Augustana Twilight with a four-mile time of 19:18.4
- Clocked a season-best 8K time of 24:27.5 at the Weiss-Crockett Invitational
- Earned first team All-League honors at the 2022 League Championships with a fifth-place finish
- Placed 27th at the NCAA Midwest Regional running the 10K in a personal-best time of 30:09.7
Leah (Hansen) Hisken, South Dakota State
Sr. | Willmar, Minn.
- First athlete to take home three consecutive Female Cross Country Athlete of the Year honors (2020, 2021, 2022)
- Earned her third consecutive League individual title and Championship MVP honor while helping the Jacks to a runner-up finish in the team standings at the 2022 League Championships
- Placed 19th at the 2022 NCAA Midwest Regional with a time of 20:40.0
- Top-20 finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional helped pace the Jacks to 10th place in the team standings, the highest finish for an SDSU team in the Division I era
Mya Kizer, South Dakota State
Jr. | Hammond, Wis.
- Earned second team All-League honors with an 11th-place finish at the 2022 League Championships
- Had a season-best 6K race at the Bradley Pink Classic with a time of 21:21.4
- Finished second at the SDSU Classic in a time of 18:22.7 and ran a season-best 5K at the Augustana Twilight (18:15.1)
UP NEXT: SDSU will host the Summit League Cross Country Championships on Oct. 28 at the Edgebrook Golf Course. Action is set to begin at 11 a.m.
