WICHITA, Kan. – Junior pitcher
Shannon Lasey completed one of her best performances as a Jackrabbit this season en route to leading South Dakota State to a win in one of its two games Friday at the Shocker Invitational. Lasey led the Jacks to a 1-0 extra innings victory in the opener at Wilkins Stadium versus Northern Colorado, then SDSU fell in its second contest to Minnesota by a 9-5 margin.
Â
Game 1 (vs. Northern Colorado)
Lasey pitched a complete game and went a season-high eight innings in SDSU's 1-0 victory over Northern Colorado.
Â
The Bears had an early opportunity in the first thanks to a lead-off single, however two groundouts and a strikeout would strand the lone Northern Colorado runner at third base. It'd be the last Bear to reach base for the next four innings.
Â
The two sides combined for just six hits as the meeting drew out as a pitcher's duel. The Bears got a runner on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but each time SDSU catcher
Brooke Dumont caught runners stealing to avoid any threat.
Â
South Dakota State got a double by Dumont in the fourth, a pinch-hit walk by
Alivya Bollen in the sixth and a pinch-hit single by
Alexa Williams in the seventh, but couldn't plate a run as UNC starter Erin Caveness kept the Jackrabbits at bay.
Â
Extra innings put a runner on second base to start the eighth for both teams. The Bears hit two groundouts and had a batter strike out and were unable to score.
Lindsey Culver opened the bottom half of the eighth on second and with one out advanced on a wild pitch to third. After an intentional walk to
Mia Jarecki, an error in the outfield off the bat of
Emma Osmundson scored Culver and gave the Jacks a walk-off victory.
Lasey improved to 7-5 on the season with the complete-game shutout. She gave up three hits and didn't allow a walk or hit by pitch in the outing.
Alli Boyle added a hit to SDSU's stat line.
Â
Game 2 (vs. Minnesota)
South Dakota State's lineup produced a better showing but Minnesota's was just a bit more timely in a 9-5 Golden Gopher win against the Jackrabbits.
Â
The Jackrabbits escaped a first inning with a scoreless tie despite the Gophers loading the bases as SDSU starter
Tori Kniesche completed a strikeout for the third out of the inning.
Â
SDSU took the first lead of the contest with three runs in the top of the third.
Cheyanne Masterson singled to open the inning and with two outs scored on an RBI triple by Osmundson.
Rozelyn Carrillo followed with an RBI double then another RBI double by
Allison Yoder extended the Jackrabbit advantage to 3-0.
Â
The Jacks enjoyed the three-run lead for an inning before Minnesota jumped ahead for good. A five-hit, five-run bottom of the fourth for the Gophers chased Kniesche from the game and put the Gophers up 5-3. Following a scoreless fifth, Minnesota scored four more runs which included a two-run home run.
Â
The Jackrabbits cut into the deficit in their final at-bat in the seventh. A Jarecki walk and
Emma Osmundson single eventually led to runs scored on RBI groundouts by Carrillo and Yoder.
Â
Kniesche took the loss for SDSU dropping her overall record to 9-4. Alexa threw two innings of relief for the Jacks and Lasey closed out the final out needed in the bottom of the sixth. Osmundson had a team-high three hits and Masterson recorded two. Both Carrillo and Yoder registered two RBIs.
Â
South Dakota State is now 16-13 on the season.
