WICHITA, Kan. – South Dakota State nearly came away with two victories on the final day of the Shocker Invitational on Sunday, but instead settled for a split of its appearances at Wichita State's Wilkins Stadium. The Jackrabbits defeated Northern Colorado, 11-2, then narrowly fell to the host Shockers 4-3.
Â
Game 1 (vs. Northern Colorado)
SDSU had six players record multi-hit games to help propel the Jacks to an 11-2 win to open the day versus the Bears.
Â
Following a scoreless first inning, the Jacks went ahead 4-0 over the next two frames. A
Mia Jarecki sacrifice fly got SDSU on the board in the second then a
Jocelyn Carrillo stolen base caused a UNC throwing error which scored
Lindsey Culver.
Rozelyn Carrillo hit a solo home run to begin the third and Culver hit an RBI single to put SDSU into the lead.
Â
The Bears responded in the bottom half with a two-run home run off of SDSU starter
Tori Kniesche. It cut the deficit for Northern Colorado to 4-2, but it wouldn't last.
Â
The top of the fourth saw
Rozelyn Carrillo and
Alli Boyle each hit two-run singles for the Jacks. Jarecki recorded an RBI double in the fifth and
Allison Yoder crushed a two-run home run to put the finishing touches on the dominant SDSU victory.
Â
Rozelyn Carrillo had a team-high three hits and three RBIs for the Jackrabbits. Jarecki, Yoder, Culver,
Jocelyn Carrillo and
Emma Osmundson each recorded two hits. Kniesche pushed through all seven innings to throw a complete game. She gave up four hits and walked seven batters while striking out nine. She improved to 10-4 on the season.
Â
Game 2 (vs. Wichita State)
The Jackrabbits almost picked up a second ranked victory on the week as SDSU held a two-run going into the bottom of the seventh. The No. 23 Shockers responded with three runs in their final at-bat to come away with a 4-3 win over the visiting Jacks.
Â
The contest was controlled for the most part by the starting pitchers until the seventh inning. A two-out walk to Culver set up
Jocelyn Carrillo who drove a double off the center-field wall and plated Culver to make it a 1-0 score in the top of the second. The bottom of the third featured a throwing error in the infield which allowed Wichita State to have a runner go from first to home and tie the score at 1-1.
Â
Wichita State's Alison Cooper and SDSU's
Shannon Lasey had strong performances in the circle. Cooper gave up just four hits and Lasey six through six innings of work before the fireworks of the seventh.
Â
The Jackrabbits began the inning with
Jocelyn Carrillo belting a solo homer. A
Cheyanne Masterson single followed and chased Cooper from the game. Masterson would be plated on a double by Jarecki to put SDSU ahead 3-1.
Â
The Shockers began the bottom of the seventh with a groundout, but turned things around as Wichita State had the top of its order come up to the plate. A single put the Shockers' first runner on but a fielder's choice followed to make it two outs. Wichita State wound up hitting four consecutive singles with the final three driving in runs to take the final contest of its home tournament.
Â
Lasey pitched a solid game despite taking the defeat and falling to 7-6 on the season. She gave up four runs, three earned, in 6 2/3 innings. She struck out six batters and walked two.
Â
Jocelyn Carrillo had her best day at the plate this season. She went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Recording hits for the Jacks were Jarecki, Masterson,
Rozelyn Carrillo and
Brooke Dumont.
