FELTON, Del. — The South Dakota State women's equestrian team closed out the first half of its season with a pair of losses to ECAC opponents during head-to-head competition Friday at the Dovington Training Center.

The Jackrabbits, who moved to 2-4 on the season, opened the day with a 13-7 loss to host Delaware State, followed by a 12-4 defeat at the hands of 10th-ranked UT Martin.

Though bettering the Hornets in raw score, 1,419-1,385, the Jackrabbits were unable to extend their two-match winning streak.

In fences, SDSU had its last three riders all score in the 80s: Hannah Steele (80), Juliana Gullo (82) and Samantha Aisenberg (83). Steele and Gullo both earned points for the Jacks while Aisenberg was outscored by Most Outstanding Performance award winner Olivia Brown, 85-83.
 Sarah Gould and Brooke Borges both suffered 76-74 losses to Victoria Croston and Lauren Dumeah, respectively.

Similar to fences, flat ended in a 3-2 victory for the Hornets with Kosal beating Steele, 73-63, for Steele's first loss of the season.

Brown besting Elizabeth Wagner, 79-65, and Croston outrode Kayla Scherer ,73-52, for DSU's two other points.

Sierra Elliot (67-0) beat Grace Mangrum and Kendyl Rudolf (73-62) won against Chloey Prichard to earn SDSU's two points in the flat discipline.

Horsemanship also had a 3-2 finish in favor of the Hornets. In her first ride of the day, Paige Wellendorf beat Aniela Cortina in a narrow 73.5-73 battle. Anna Minich outscored Kirsten Buckwalter 76-72.5 for SDSU's highest Western score of the competition.
 Brighton McBride lost to MOP Ashley Grasso 75.5-73, Avery Bergen was outscored by Hallie Prater 75-70.5 and McKenna Hooyer was unable to match Claire Andrews's score, losing 75-67.
 Ada Hirschfeld was the only Jackrabbit to win a head-to-head in reining, beating Cambry Hedges 67.5-58. Maryn Mead finished a half a point under Bailey Henderson, losing 72-71.5.
Hornet riders Anna Payne and Estella Estus topped Jackrabbit riders Emma Riggs 71-69.5 and Adisyn Kuxhaus 72.5-70 respectively.
 UT Martin 12, South Dakota State 4
For the second time this season, UT Martin downed the Jackrabbits in head-to-head competition.

In the flat discipline, UT Martin's Bridget Vieau and Elizabeth Becker tallied the first two points on the board over Sierra Elliott (76-57) and Elizabeth Wagner (71-51), respectively. Hannah Steele earned SDSU's first point of the battle over Lydia Jordan 79-71.Â
 Kayla Scherer's 80-point ride was the highest-scoring Jackrabbit ride in flat but was outscored by Gabby Adams who brought in an 85-80 victory and the MOP award for the flat discipline.

Fences saw an even 2-2 score at the end of the event with SDSU's Juliana Gullo and Brooke Borges earning points for the Jacks. Gullo's win was over Kate Mills by a score of 79-69 while Borges beat Adams, 74-70.

Steele suffered her first fences loss of the season against MOP Emerson Maier 85-78 while Sarah Gould was defeated by Elizabeth Becker.

UT Martin owned both Western disciplines with a final tally of 7-1 and a sweep in horsemanship.

The sole Jackrabbit point of the western events was scored by Ada Hirschfeld with a 68.5-61 victory over UT Martin's Lexi Bailey. Maryn Mead's ride of 70.5 was the highest for the Jackrabbits, but was beaten by Elise Mason, who scored a 72 for UT Martin's highest reining score of the meet.

In horsemanship, Anna Minich narrowly lost to Lillian Laney, 74-73.5, McKenna Hooyer lost to Bailey 74.5-65.5, Avery Bergen was defeated by Mia McAfoos 74.5-68 and senior Paige Wellendorf was outscored by Kate Davis 73-70.
