South Dakota State's equestrian season resumes Thursday, with the Jackrabbits kicking off a series of head-to-head competitions against top-10 opponents from the state of Texas. Â
The Jackrabbits will compete three times over the course of the week: at 10 a.m. Thursday in Fort Worth against TCU at 10 a.m.; in Dallas for a competition against SMU on Friday, and finishing the tour at Baylor on Saturday in Waco. Â
In the fall portion of the season, the Jackrabbits posted a 2-4 overall record, including a 1-3 mark in the Eastern College Athletic Conference.Â
After suffering two early losses to Fresno State and UT Martin, South Dakota State fired back quickly with a meet sweep against UC Davis and Minnesota Crookston before dropping one to Delaware State and another to UT Martin.Â
Hannah Steele has been essential for the Jackrabbits all season. While competing in both jumping seat disciplines, the senior holds 5-1 records in both the fences and flat events.Â
Freshman Anna Minich has been a nice addition to South Dakota State this season, as well, going 3-1 in her first meets in horsemanship while earning Most Outstanding Performer in her first two outings.Â
at Texas Christan University – 10 a.m. Thursday
The No. 3 Horned Frogs jump into their ninth meet of the season with a 5-3 record while boasting a 3-0 record in Big 12 conference action. Â
TCU has had one of the tougher schedules among the NCEA teams, competing against each one of the top-six ranked schools.Â
In their matchup against undefeated and No. 1 Auburn, the Horned Frogs held their own but ended the meet with an 11-7 loss.. Â
In their last two meets of the fall season, TCU fell to both No. 7 SMU, which TCU beat earlier this season, and No. 2 Texas A&M.Â
The battle between the Jacks and Horned Frogs will take place at the John Justin Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.Â
at Southern Methodist University – 11 a.m. Friday
Though ranked seventh nationally, the No. 7 Mustangs walk into their matchup against the Jackrabbits holding a losing record of 3-4.Â
The back-to-back national champions have had some close meets fall the wrong way this season as they lost 11-7 to a ranked Georgia squad and fell on a raw-score tiebreaker (1,599.50-1,548.75) after SMU and TCU each tallied 10 team points in their first matchup of the season on Sept. 20.Â
Their last two wins came by way of blowout as they handled both TCU (15-4) and Baylor (15-3), but finished out the fall portion of the schedule with a loss to Oklahoma State,13-5.Â
The Mustangs have excelled in both Western events, averaging 6.5 points in horsemanship and reining.
Friday's competition begins at 11 a.m. at the Dallas Equestrian Center.Â
at Baylor – 11 a.m. SaturdayÂ
No. 10 Baylor has started the season 1-4 this year and is 1-2 through three Big 12 matches. Â
The Bears have suffered losses this season to teams such as TCU, Oklahoma State, SMU and most recently, Texas A&M.Â
Their sole win of the season came on Nov. 1 when the Bears beat the Bulldogs of Fresno State, 12-8. In that event, Baylor excelled in the jumping seat discipline where they scored seven of their 12 total points. Â
Michigan native Madison Mitchell has been stellar in Baylor's most recent outings. Mitchell has been awarded MOP honors in Baylor's last three meets against Oklahoma State, Fresno State and Texas A&M.Â
The Bears will see the Jackrabbits later on this season again at home for both teams' last meet of the regular season. Â
Saturday's matchup will be held at the Willis Family Equestrian Center in Waco, Texas.Â
