BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. — Julia Werkhoven was a two-time winner in the jumping seat events for South Dakota State, but fifth-ranked South Carolina was too much for the Jackrabbits in a 15-3 Gamecocks victory in head-to-head equestrian competition Friday at One Wood Farm.

USC improved to 7-6 overall. The Jackrabbits dropped to 3-6 on the season.

A senior from Tempe, Arizona, Werkhove picked up the lone points scored by SDSU in both fences and flat. She posted an 84-81 victory over Natalie Jayne in their fences matchup on Dexter, then outscored Ellie Beard by a 90-88 count in their matchup on Tanner in flat.

Four of SDSU's five riders in flat scored 80 or more points, was were bested as three of their USC counterparts tallied scores of 90 or higher.

SDSU's only other point was picked up by freshman Emilie Strahm, who was awarded a winning score of 68 aboard Nike in reining.

Two other Jackrabbits tied in Western events. Paige Wellendorf tied USC's Jordyn Humbert with a score of 71.5 in horsemanship, while Paige Butterfield matched the Gamecocks' Chloe VanStone with a score of 69 in reining.

The Jackrabbits conclude regular season action at 11 a.m. Eastern Time Saturday with a head-to-head competition at fourth-ranked Georgia.
