South Dakota State University equestrian will be under new leadership during the upcoming 2024-25 season as Kamerra Brown returns to take on the role of head coach.
Â
"It's great to have Kamerra back on campus and directing our equestrian team" SDSU Director of Athletics Justin Sell said. "Her energy and positive leadership will make a big difference in our program."
Â
Brown has extensive collegiate coaching experience at both the IHSA and NCEA levels, and previously served as an assistant coach with the Jackrabbits from 2010-14. She began her earlier stint with the Jackrabbits as a graduate assistant before moving into a full-time assistant coaching position with the jumping seat squad for three seasons.
Â
"I am so excited for this opportunity," Brown said. "I've been wanting to come back here and I look forward to the progression that we'll be able to make with the equestrian program in the coming years."
Â
For the past four years, Brown served as a hunter/jumper instructor and assistant professor for equine studies at William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri. At William Woods, she oversaw academic activities of 25 students while also managing 30 horses.
Â
Earlier this year, Brown was honored as the Missouri Horse Show Association Person of the Year. She received the Distinguished Equine Industry Alumni Award from the National Collegiate Equestrian Association in 2021 and has been a United States Hunter Jumper Association certified trainer since 2019.
Â
In addition, Brown was the adviser to the Equestrian Club and mentored equine studies students at Bridgewater College (Va.) from 2016-18. She also was an assistant equestrian coach at her alma mater, Delaware State, from 2014-16.
Â
As a collegiate competitor at DSU, Brown was elected a team captain for three seasons and earned team most valuable performer awards for hunt seat on two occasions. She was inducted into the Delaware State University Hall of Fame in 2022.
Â
Joining Brown's coaching staff as Western coach is Stephanie Helsen.
Â
Helsen spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Delaware State, where she coached five All-America performers between the horsemanship and reining events.
Â
"Stephanie is going to be a huge addition for us," Brown said. "I am so excited for her to come here after great success at Delaware State and she is going to add to that with the Jackrabbits."
Â
Helsen began her coaching career as a student assistant at Oklahoma State in the spring of 2022. The Cowgirls won both the National Collegiate Equestrian Association and Big 12 Conference championships that spring.
Â
As a collegiate competitor at Oklahoma State, Helsen was selected as the team's Most Outstanding Performer in reining during both her sophomore and senior season and served as reining team captain as a senior. She also was honored multiple times on all-academic teams selected by the Big 12 and NCEA, while also earning Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors from Oklahoma State.
Â
Helsen graduated in 2021 with bachelor of science degrees in agricultural education and agricultural leadership.
Allie Kreindler returns for her third season as coach of the jumping seat squad to round out the 2024-25 coaching staff.
