VERMILLION — Gigi Hioki won the 200-yard freestyle and added a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle to pace the South Dakota State women's swimming and diving team on the opening night of the Coyote Extravaganza Friday night at the USD Natatorium.
A junior from Honolulu, Hawaii, Hioki clocked a winning time of 1 minute, 54.35 seconds in the 200 freestyle, followed by a runner-up time of 5:11.62 in the 500. Abigail Barkhurst of Northern Iowa won the 500 in 5:10.99.
Five other Jackrabbits recorded top-five individual finishes in the five-team event, including Jenna Currier with a third-place time of 58.43 seconds in the 100 butterfly.
A pair of Jackrabbits posted top-five finishes in both the 400 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Sophomores Hailey Creary (4:40.75) and Emma Ingalls (4:41.07) turned in a 4-5 finish in the 400 IM, while Hannah Miller (1:06.90) and Jessalyn Carpenter (1:07.24) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke.
To close out the night, the Jackrabbit quartet of Currier, Mia Pendleton, Sara Juez and Hioki finished third in the 200 freestyle relay after combining for a time of 1:37.76.
SDSU stands third in the team race with 882.5 points. Northern Iowa leads with 1,092 points, followed by host South Dakota with 961.5.
Competition concludes Saturday with a session starting at 10 a.m.
