OMAHA, Neb. - South Dakota State senior
Brooklyn Meyer put together one of the best nights of her career Monday as the Jackrabbits topped Creighton 78-62 in the season opener for both sides.
Meyer dropped 33 points, one shy of her career high, on 14-of-20 shooting in 36 minutes on the floor. She also contributed eight rebounds, five blocks and five assists. Meyer scored 13 of SDSU's 20 points in the second quarter and 10 of 26 in the fourth.
South Dakota State led by five points after three quarters of action, 52-47, following an
Emilee Fox 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Jacks then shot 85 percent in the final period and outscored the Bluejays 26-15 in that stretch to pull away.
Katie Vasecka was 8-of-12 on the night with a pair of 3-pointers for her 18 points. The sophomore tallied four boards and three assists. Senior
Madison Mathiowetz drained all three of her 3-point attempts for nine points to go with four rebounds.
Maggie Hartwig grabbed 12 rebounds in her Jackrabbit debut and chipped in eight points.
South Dakota State finished the game 53 percent from the floor and 6-of-13 from the 3-point line. The Bluejays shot 33 percent overall. The Jacks out-rebounded the Jays, 39 to 37, while Creighton had the edge in assists, 15- to 13, and steals, six to five.
Creighton freshman Ava Zediker dropped 17 points (5-of-7) in her collegiate debut to lead the Bluejays. Kennedy Townsend joined her in double figures with 14 points.
NOTES
- Creighton still leads the all-time series between these teams, 11-7, but South Dakota State has won the last two meetings.Â
- This was SDSU's second ever road win over Creighton.
- Brooklyn Meyer has scored at least 30 points in a single game four times in her career. The first three were as a junior last season.
- Last season, Juju Watkins (Southern California) was the only player in the country to put up a stat line of at least 30 points, five rebounds, five blocks and five assists. Watkins tallied 38 points, 11 rebounds, eight blocks and five assists against UCLA last February.
- Meyer's 33 points brought her career scoring total to 1,663 points, which is 23rd all time at South Dakota State.
