BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State pitcher
Sylvia Shromoff threw nine shutout innings in one of the best starts of her career, but it wasn't enough as a two-run single in the 10th inning made the difference for Omaha in a 2-0 victory over South Dakota State on Friday at Jerald T. Moriarty Field.Â
Â
It was a classic pitcher's duel between Shromoff and Omaha starter Maddia Groff.Â
Â
Both teams picked up hits in the second inning. SDSU got out of the top of the inning behind a 6-4-3 double play, while Omaha got out of its frame in the field thanks to two consecutive strikeouts registered by Groff.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits turned double plays in the third and fifth innings to buoy Shromoff's performance.Â
Â
South Dakota State had its best opportunities in the seventh and eighth innings. The Jacks got two runners on base with one out in the seventh, but a strikeout and fly out ended that threat. The eighth inning saw SDSU
Madi Conklin hit a lead-off double. A one-out walk to
Mia Jarecki put two SDSU runners on base, but they'd be left stranded.Â
Â
Shromoff worked her way into extra innings, and despite two Maverick runners reaching in the ninth, she got out of it unscathed.Â
Â
Omaha's lineup finally capitalized in the 10th inning. Two singles and a walk set the Mavericks up with the bases loaded and two outs. The Mavericks' Sydney Thomason came up and hit a two-run single to left field, breaking up the scoreless tie.Â
Â
Groff made quick work of the Jackrabbit lineup in the bottom of the frame to close out a complete game shutout.Â
Â
The Omaha ace improved to 21-4 on the season and improved her 2025 ERA to 1.33 in the process. She allowed four hits and three walks, while she struck out 11 hitters on 156 pitches.Â
Â
Shromoff fell to 4-2 this season but did so by throwing her third complete game of her career. She allowed two runs on nine hits and two hits while striking out three.Â
Â
Abby Gentry had two of SDSU's four hits.Â
Â
SDSU dropped to 24-23 overall and 9-4 in Summit League play. Omaha improved to 34-9 overall and 13-3 in conference games. Â
