LARSON BREAKS 5000-METER RECORD

STANFORD, Calif. — South Dakota State distance runners hold their own against top competition at the Stanford Invite while the remainder of the Jackrabbit squad puts up solid opening marks at the USD Early Bird Friday and Saturday afternoon.

Cody Larson set the bar high in his season debut as the junior posted a program record in the 5000-meter race to win his heat. Larson crossed the finish line at 13:34.36 to best Josh Yeager's previous record of 13:42.82.

The 10,000-meter competition saw some stellar Jackrabbit performances as Jessica Lutmer nearly set a program record as well. The junior crossed the line at 34:00.53, less than one second away from Leah Hansen's record of 33:59.68. Courtney Stadter opened her first collegiate outdoor season with a time of 34:12.94 to become the third-best performer in program history. Carson Noecker represented the men's side of the 10,000-meter race. Noecker placed 11th in his heat with a time of 29:40.89.

Grace Waage also made her mark on the SDSU top 10 all-time list. Waage ran a 1500-meter time of 4:25.75 to become the sixth-best performer in program history and finish 10th in her heat. On the men's side, Brandon Kampsen finished fifth in his heat with a time of 3:46.26, and Jackson Dutcher placed fourth in his field at 3:51.14.

Josh Becker was back in action as the senior participated in the 3000-meter steeple chase. Becker placed seventh in his field with a time of 8:56.97.

Ben Anteau was the lone Jackrabbit representing SDSU at the Mike Fanelli Distance Carnival. Anteau competed in the 3000-meter steeple, placing fourth with a time of 9:02.67.

Results

Madison Kizer opened the outdoor season with a gold medal as the senior cleared 5-08 (1.73m) to win the high jump competition. Taylor Jochum competed alongside Kizer and finished in the top 10 with a jump of 5-00.25 (1.53m). On the men's side, Grayson Ring and Holen Brooks finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Ring cleared 6-05.00 (1.96m), while Brooks finished with a leap of 6-01.25 (1.86m).

The men's discus team put on a show as Caiden Fredrick, TJ Christensen and Ryan Hackbart all finished in the top five. Fredrick won the event with a second-best throw of 174-9.00 (53.27m), Christensen posted a mark of 158-0.00 (48.16m) to finish runner-up and Hackbart placed fifth with a throw of 150-0.00 (45.72m).

On the women's side, Milee Young finished runner-up with a throw of 158-07 (48.35m). Ryann Moline, Kaitlynn Bot, and Lydia Hill competed in the discus throw as well, with the trio finishing 14th through 16th. Moline claimed 14th with a mark of 123-04 (37.60m), Bot placed 15th with a throw of 120-08 (36.79m) and Hill placed 16th with a mark of 118-09 (36.21m).

Moline also competed in the javelin throw alongside Sloan Young and Kiylee Westra, the three of whom placed in the top 15 out of 32 competitors. Moline took fourth with a mark of 126-07 (38.60m), Young placed sixth with a throw of 118-05 (36.09m) and Westra finished 15th with a mark of 107-08 (32.83m).

On the men's side, Ryan Benson finished seventh in the javelin with a mark of 148-00 (45.13m).

Fredrick and Hackbart also saw solid performances in the hammer throw. Fredrick threw a mark of 168-07 (51.39m) to land in the top five, while Hackbart placed 10th with a throw of 153-06 (46.80m).

Kirsten Kilker and Josie Curry represented the Jackrabbits in the women's hammer throw. Kilker finished seventh with a mark of 155-07 (47.43m), while Curry placed 11th with a throw of 145-07 (44.38m).

On the track, Sam Castle ran the 800-meter in 1:51.23 to clutch silver. Joe Dustin competed as well, finishing ninth at 1:54.30.

Nicole Swanson and Kadense Dooley clutched top-five finishes in the 5000-meter race. Swanson crossed the line at 17:37.00 to take bronze, while Dooley placed fifth at 17:40.65.

Katelyn Darnell got her reps in this weekend as the senior competed in four different events. Darnell opened with a 200-meter dash personal record time of 25.35 to win the event. Next, Darnell took 20th in the javelin throw with a mark of 102-04 (31.21m). On day two, the senior finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdle finals with a time of 14.86. Darnell closed out the weekend with a 14th-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 16-08.75 (5.10m).

In the women's 1500-meter, Emma Ecker, Hannah Spoden and Halle Bauer all finished in the top 10. Ecker clocked a time of 4:43.64 to take eighth, Spoden crossed the line at 4:48.26 for ninth and Bauer placed 10th with a time of 4:49.17.
