SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The South Dakota State men's swimming and diving team opened its season with a 114-85 victory over Augustana on Friday in Sioux Falls.
The Jackrabbits swept the top four spots in the 200-yard backstroke and won three individual events, with Evan Schott, Luke Watkins and Cody Vertin touching first.
Schott led the 200 backstroke sweep in 1:53.97, followed by Andrew Gundrum (1:54.86), Colby Williams (1:56.11) and Aiden Carstensen (1:56.38).
Watkins won the 1,000 freestyle in 9:57.69, finishing nearly 32 seconds ahead of the field. Austin Lewis (10:34.44) and Roan Walsmith (10:37.11) placed third and fourth.
Vertin captured the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.23, more than six seconds clear of teammate Aidan Jackson (2:12.17), and added a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley with a season-best 1:52.94, just 0.64 seconds behind the winner.
Landon Schemel was runner-up in both the 200 butterfly (1:54.31) and the 200 freestyle (1:43.97). Colt Frein posted a pair of second-place finishes as well, touching in :46.78 in the 100 freestyle and :21.40 in the 50 freestyle. Nik Keuser was third in the 50 free (:21.45).
Zavier Kranz placed third in the 200 free (1:46.59) and fourth in the 100 free (48.11). Hayden Tellier took third in the 200 fly (1:58.34), and Roman Billings was second in 1-meter diving (229.50).
