BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State held a one-goal lead for over 60 minutes, but Oral Roberts scored two goals in a 12-minute stretch late in the second half to defeat the Jackrabbits 2-1 on Thursday at Fishback Soccer Park.
The Jackrabbits got off to a strong start. Senior
Katelyn Beulke hit a strike for a goal in the 10th minute, behind assists from
Ellie Gusman and
Hannah Langstaff, to initially give South Dakota State a 1-0 advantage. SDSU held that lead going into halftime as each side produced four shots over the course of the opening 45 minutes.
Oral Roberts continued its attacking pressure as the second half commenced. SDSU's
Mallorie Benhart made a save in the 49th minute, then the Jacks nearly took a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute but a Beulke shot was stopped by a Golden Eagle defender.
The Golden Eagles created several attacking opportunities over the next 20 minutes of action. ORU finally found an equalizer in the 74th minute as Cameron Silva found the back of the net. The Golden Eagles recorded four more shots before the 86th minute go-ahead goal. Layney Molini scored with four minutes remaining to provide the visiting side with the final 2-1 tally.
Oral Roberts – the United Soccer Coaches' top team in the West Region, as well as a squad receiving votes in the national poll – improved to 9-1-3 overall with the win. ORU is now also 3-0-1 in Summit League play. The Golden Eagles ended a five-match losing streak to the Jackrabbits, while they also put a halt to SDSU's 17-match unbeaten streak in the series between the two sides.
The Golden Eagles finished the match with a 17-9 edge in shots, including a 7-5 difference in shots on goal.
Benhart made fives saves in goal for the Jackrabbits. She was joined on the defensive side by
Sophia Emerson and
Gentry Williams who played each played the full 90 minutes.
Jenna Maloy also competed for 84 minutes in the SDSU midfield, while
Taryn Hettich came in for a reserve-high 47 minutes.
Beulke registered a team-best three shots with two on goal.
MaKynlie Cade had two shots with each on goal.
South Dakota State fell to 6-3-3 on the season and 1-1-2 in Summit League play.
