OMAHA, Neb. — South Dakota State scored a pair of goals in the opening half as the Jackrabbits completed a 2-0 victory over Omaha on Sunday, Oct. 18, at Caniglia Field.
The Jacks jumped ahead early with the match's first goal notched in the seventh minute. SDSU possessed the ball just inside the box as
Hannah Langstaff passed it back to
Mia Bosch. The Jackrabbits' junior midfielder in Bosch then sent a cross in front of goal. Senior
Ellie Gusman raced in front of the Omaha goalkeeper to bounce a header into the net and give SDSU a 1-0 advantage.
The two sides had a back-and-forth battle in possession through a majority of the first half. That's when the Jackrabbits struck again.
Peyton Held passed the ball to the penalty spot where she found
Adrianne Agbayani. The SDSU forward passed back to teammate
MaKynlie Cade who sat just outside the top of the box. Cade swung a right-footed shot that found its way into the top-left side of the goal to push the Jackrabbits lead to 2-0 in the 41st minute.
SDSU took that margin into the halftime break. The Jackrabbit back line was solid over the course of the entire game. State goalkeeper
Mallorie Benhart didn't snag her first save until the 51st minute when Omaha got its first shot on goal. The Mavericks finished with just two shots on goal to the Jackrabbits' five.
Defenders
Stella Braddock and
Sophia Emerson each played the full 90 minutes for South Dakota State. Joining them by playing over 70-plus minutes were Bosch, Langstaff,
Gentry Williams,
Jenna Maloy and
Taryn Hettich. Benhart made two saves in the game as she earned her sixth shutout of the campaign.
South Dakota State improved to 8-4-3 overall with the win and 3-2-2 in Summit League play. Omaha dropped to 3-7-5 (2-3-2).
