BROOKINGS, S.D. – St. Thomas scored a goal in the 107th minute to close out a 3-2 victory in extra time over South Dakota State on Friday, Nov. 6, and advance to the semifinals of The Summit League Women's Soccer Championship. The defeat ended the Jackrabbits' 2026 season.
The two sides battled through a scoreless first half. SDSU outshot St. Thomas by a 10-2 margin, but Tommies goalkeeper Sophia Alvarez made four saves to keep it knotted at 0-0.
The Tommies struck first in the second half. A cross into the box found Kalli Knowles in the box who kicked a deflected shot that found the back of the net to put St. Thomas ahead 1-0 in the 55th minute.
South Dakota State tied it up in the 74th minute. Mia Bosch took a corner kick opportunity and found defender Abbi Gibbs racing into the box who headed the ball in for her first collegiate goal.
The Jackrabbits then scored what looked like would be a go-ahead goal in the 83rd minute. Hannah Langstaff and Mia Bosch opened up a corner kick opportunity that led to a cross into the box. A Tommies defender got an initial header on the ball, but Jenna Maloy stepped up and smashed a shot into the net to give the Jacks the advantage.
SDSU began to work to kill the rest of the remaining seven minutes on the clock. However, St. Thomas got back in possession of the ball and went on the attack. As the clock dipped into the 89th minute, the Tommies drew a foul in the box which resulted in a penalty kick chance. Becca Smith stepped up and converted on the attempt, equalizing the score to make it 2-2 and eventually sent the game into extra time.
The foes battled through an initial overtime before going into the final 10 minutes of extra time. The 107th minute saw the Tommies create a counter attack scoring opportunity. The SDSU defense broke down, allowing Izzy McEwan a wide open lane towards the goal with the goalkeeper out of position. McEwan received a pass and easily booted the ball into the net and gave the Tommies a victory in the program's first-ever appearance in The Summit League tournament.
