South Dakota State looks ahead to its five-game appearance at the Whataburger Invitational hosted by Tarleton State in Stephenville, Texas. The Jackrabbits hold a 6-2 overall record heading into their first game of the event which SDSU opens against Stephen F. Austin at 10 a.m. on Friday.
The Whataburger Invitational has already had a schedule adjustment due to anticipated rain early on Saturday. The Jackrabbits will take on the host Texans at 3 p.m. Friday. SDSU will play back-to-back games on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. against SFA followed by Colgate. The Jacks close their Texas stay on Sunday with a 9:30 a.m. finale versus Colgate.Â
SDSU has already faced Stephen F. Austin twice last week in Commerce. The two sides split the meetings with the Lumberjacks earning a 7-6 win, then the Jackrabbits claiming a 4-3 victory. The Jacks went 1-4 at last season's Whataburger Invitational which included a 10-1 loss to Tarleton State. SDSU is 4-3 all-time against the Texans with all four wins coming in 2023. South Dakota State has played Colgate three times and holds a 3-0 record with all three victories earned during the 2019 season.
The Jacks have continued their Lone Star State stay with eight games so far this season. Following a 4-1 showing at the East Texas A&M Leadoff, SDSU played at Baylor Tuesday and a doubleheader at Abilene Christian on Wednesday.Â
SDSU and Baylor were tied at 1-1 after 3 1/2 innings before the Bears scored nine runs across two frames to wrap up a 10-2 five-inning victory. The Jacks recorded three hits and drew three walks, while
Amanda Vacanti picked up a loss in the circle.Â
The Jackrabbits combined for 19 hits in a two-game span en route to a sweep over the Wildcats Wednesday. SDSU won in six innings in the opener by a 12-3 score, then held on for an 8-5 victory in the nightcap.
Akayla Barnard threw a complete game to help SDSU in game one, while Vacanti allowed one run across three innings in relief in game two.Â
SDSU had a strong day at the plate in Abilene.
Emma Vike registered a combined five hits between the two games and had two runs and two RBIs in the second affair. Aliya Bollen had a two-hit and three RBI performance in game one while
Bria Riebel produced multiple hits and runs scored in that game. Game two saw Vacanti help her cause in the circle with three hits, including a solo home run, in the win.
Already eight games into the season, the Jackrabbits rank among the nation's best in multiple categories. SDSU is currently first at the Division I level in doubles as a team with 21. The Jackrabbits also rank third in hits (69), sixth in RBIs (51), seventh in walks (32) and ninth in total runs scored (9).Â
