BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State posts five wins and 12 total podium finishes at the SDSU Classic Saturday evening.
HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN "It was a big weekend at track. I think a lot of positives came out of the meet. There are certainly some things we need to get in order before the conference championships, but I'm ooud of the way our student athletes competed this weekend. I think we had plenty of fight, but it's time to get everything back on track here in the next couple of weeks for the Conference Championships."
The women's 4x400-meter relay had an electric run to round out the night. The team, consisting of Jenna Johnson, Reese Luze, Maggie Madsen and Erika Kuntz, won the event with a time of 3:43.66, the second-best time in program history. Their run was less than a second off the program record of 3:43.05, and became the new SDSU Classic meet record.
Cody Larson had an impressive performance in the mile competition. The senior claimed silver with a time of 4:00.97, only 0.02 seconds off from Head Coach Rod DeHaven's program record, leaving Larson as the second-best performer in program history. Will Lohr competed as well, finishing in the top five with a time of 4:04.62 to become the seventh-fastest performer in SDSU history.
On the women's side, Eleni Lovgren took silver at 4:53.61, earning her the spot of ninth-best runner in program history.
Carter Johnson showed up and showed out in the 60-meter hurdles. C. Johnson took the dub with a time of 8.04 to become the fifth-best performer in program history. On the women's side, Silja Gunderson clocked 8.68 to take bronze and become the fourth-best hurdler in program history. Earlier in the meet, Gunderson posted a top-10 time of 7.60 in the 60-meter dash, becoming the eighth-fastest performer.
The women had quite the showing in the 200-meter dash. Ellie Harris and Maggie Madsen finished first and second, respectively, in the 200-meter invitational event. Harris clocked 24.12 to become the second-best performer in program history, while Madsen finished at 24.12 to take third-best performer of all time. In the 200-meter dash, Sian O'Sullivan placed fourth with a time of 24.70 to become the ninth-best performer in SDSU history.
On the men's side, Griffin Fischer won the 200-meter race with a personal record of 21.64 to become the sixth-best performer in program history.
Madalyn Childs won the 800-meter event on Saturday evening with a time of 2:19.96.
J. Johnson and Kuntz also saw solid performances in the 400-meter invite. J. Johnson clocked 55.48 to place fourth, while Kuntz claimed fifth at 55.78 to become the fourth-fastest athlete in program history.
Hadley Carlson won the high jump with a leap of 5-04.25 (1.63m). On the men's side, Grayson Ring claimed bronze with a jump of 6-08.75 (2.05m) to tie Carson Kirwan and Matt Heisel for seventh-best performer in program history.
Brett Fraker finished runner-up in the triple jump with a mark of 46-10.00 (14.27m). Johanna Pihl took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18-03.25 (5.57m).
Joe Dustin competed in the 600-meter, where he placed eighth in the event with a time of 1:20.60 to become the seventh-best performer in program history.
