BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State women's basketball team will host its annual cancer awareness game Thursday, February 12 when it plays North Dakota at First Bank & Trust Arena.
The South Dakota State team will wear pink and white Under Armour uniforms for the game, which will be sold via live auction immediately following the contest. In previous seasons, the auction has raised as much as $18,000. As in past years, auction proceeds will benefit the Edith Sanford Breast Center in Sioux Falls.
The Jackrabbits have a long tradition of hosting an annual cancer awareness game, but this season is SDSU's second hosting an official Play4Kay game through the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. With the help of a grant funded by the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, proceeds from the 2025 and 2026 SDSU jersey auctions will go toward purchasing a new, updated 3D mammogram unit for a hospital in the Sanford network. The replaced model will be sent to a community in Ghana that does not currently have any breast cancer screening technology.
Representatives from the Play4Kay organization, located in Durham, N.C., will be in Brookings to present a check to the Edith Sanford Breast Center during the game. The Play4Kay contingent will also work with Sanford to present educational sessions for high school students at Brookings High School on Friday as part of the Play 4 Kay EmPOWERment Tour. The EmPOWERment Tour is designed to change the narrative around all cancers affecting women by educating, empowering and equipping the next generation with the tools needed to positively impact their family members and communities.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink to Thursday's game and pick up an "I Play 4" poster when they arrive to be featured on the "I Play 4" cam. The first 750 fans will receive a pink Jacks keychain. Sanford's mobile mammogram unit will be on-site from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at First Bank & Trust Arena for visitors to tour and learn more about the Edith Sanford Breast Center.
Play4Kay is a national movement in sports that honors the legacy of Coach Kay Yow by bringing together players, coaches, officials and fans in the fight against all cancers affecting women. It also serves as a powerful platform to celebrate survivors and inspire hope for those still battling the disease.
The Edith Sanford Breast Center, a national nonprofit organization, has over 24 locations and approximately 200 providers in South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota and is an integrated part of Sanford Health.
