South Dakota State returns to Summit League play with a trip to Omaha to take on the Mavericks in a three-game series at Connie Claussen Field. The Jackrabbits and Mavs square off at 6 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday before the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.Â
SDSU is 47-71-1 all-time against Omaha. The two sides have been formidable foes of late having played one another in each of the last five Summit League conference tournaments. The Jacks won all six meetings in 2021 on their way to their first Summit League tournament title. SDSU then lost a tournament game to Omaha, leading to a winner-take-all championship tilt in 2022, that the Jacks earned to claim a repeat crown. The Mavs responded by earning three consecutive Summit League tournament titles, two of which came in championship matchups against the Jacks. The two teams are 9-9 in the series over the last four seasons.Â
Omaha leads The Summit League standings with an 8-1 record, most recently falling in its finale last weekend to St. Thomas. The Mavericks are 26-8 overall. Rated 35th in the latest NCAA RPI rankings, Omaha is among the top five programs in both the D1Softball.com and Softball America mid-major polls.
South Dakota stands at 23-24 overall following a four-game visit to Iowa's Dr. Christine Grant Classic last weekend. The Jackrabbits faced a pair of then top-70 rated programs in the RPI at the time in Iowa and Georgia Tech. SDSU came away with a 6-0 win over the Yellow Jackets, while falling 10-1 in their second meeting. The Jacks swept the Hawkeyes, beating the host side 3-2 in extra innings and 7-4 in SDSU's finale.Â
The win for SDSU against Georgia Tech featured the program's first victory over an active Atlantic Coast Conference member. The Jackrabbits are now 2-15 all-time against the current ACC membership. SDSU picked up its first win against Iowa since 2020 and swept the Hawkeyes for the first time since a doubleheader in Iowa City in 2018.
Several Jackrabbits had standout weekends in Iowa.
Amanda Vacanti pitched an eight-inning complete game en route to SDSU's victory over the Hawkeyes. She didn't allow an earned run in the effort.
Tayler Baker threw 12 innings, which included a complete-game shutout against Georgia Tech, to go 2-0.
Abby Gentry hit a team-best .636 over the four-game stretch.
Emma Vike racked up six hits while freshmen
Ella Berlage and
Bria Riebel each hit .333 with Riebel hitting a pair of doubles and a home run. Â
SDSU is batting .325 through nine Summit League games. The lineup has been led in conference play by
Emma Christensen (.560), Gentry (.560), Riebel (.452) and
Akayla Barnard (.357) at the plate. Riebel has a team-high four home runs while Barnard has three. Riebel also has a team-best 11 RBIs while Christensen, Gentry and Barnard have six RBIs apiece. Gentry has hit an SDSU-high five doubles.    Â
The Jackrabbits' rotation has logged a 4.42 ERA in Summit League action. Barnard and
Madi Mangulis have two wins apiece. Leading the squad in ERA are Barnard (1.75), Vacanti (2.10) and Baker (4.77).Â
Omaha ranks atop The Summit League in several categories. The Mavs are first overall in batting average (.326), fielding percentage (.976), on-base percentage (.448), scoring (7.65), slugging percentage (.573) and walks (160). Eight Mavericks hit at least .316 while Alexis Wiggins and Maddia Groff sport sub-3.00 ERAs and double-digit wins.
