OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha hit two clutch home runs that helped lifted the Mavericks over South Dakota State, 5-1, on Sunday at Connie Claussen Field. The win sealed a Summit League series sweep for Omaha over South Dakota State.Â
Â
The Mavericks got out to a 2-0 start in the first inning. SDSU starting pitcher
Madi Mangulis got two outs in the frame without allowing a hit to that point. With a runner on first base, Omaha's Katherine Johnson hit a two-run home run to put the Mavs in front.Â
Â
Maddia Groff, who picked up a win in Friday's meeting versus the Jackrabbits, got out to a stellar start for Omaha in the circle. She didn't allow a Jackrabbit to pick up a hit or reach base until the fourth inning.Â
Â
Mangulis hung with Groff through a majority of the game. The SDSU pitcher threw four consecutive scoreless frames to keep the Jackrabbits in striking distance.Â
Â
South Dakota State got on the board in the top of the sixth.
Emma Vike hit an infield single, which took a challenge and review, that overturned an initial call of an out.
Abby Gentry came to the plate with two outs and smacked an RBI to the left-center field wall to plate Vike and cut the score to 2-1.Â
Â
The Mavericks responded in the bottom of the sixth. Mangulis allowed a single and walk in the inning, but had Omaha's Emma Durr down to an 0-2 count with two outs recorded. Durr battled back into the count and eventually launched a three-run home run over the left-field fence to push the Mavericks' advantage to 5-1.Â
Â
Groff struck out all three batters in the top of the seventh to wrap up a complete-game performance.
Â
SDSU's Mangulis was credited with the loss. She threw six innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. Mangulis struck out four batters and walked three. Gentry had two of SDSU's four hits with both being doubles.
Alli Boyle, along with Vike, had SDSU's remaining hits.  Â
