BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to St. Thomas Friday afternoon at Jerald T. Moriarty. The Jacks fell by scores of 11-5 and 6-1.
Game One
St. Thomas homered four times to produce eight runs in the series opener. UST's Leadoff batter Laken Lienhard put the first run on the board with a deep shot to left field for the 1-0 lead. The Jacks responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI ground out by
Amanda Vacanti, scoring
Emma Vike from third base.
The Tommies added a pair of runs in the third, fourth and fifth frames to lead 7-1.
A two-out triple by
Abby Gentry put the junior in scoring position in the fifth inning, then Akayla Banard doubled to send Gentry home. Vacanti notched another RBI with a single to score Banard and bring the Jacks within four at 7-3.
UST went up 8-3 during the sixth, then a three-run homer made it 11-3 in the seventh. Banard hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to make it an 11-5 game, and the Jackrabbits later had two runners on base, but the Tommies shut down SDSU's comeback effort.
Gentry, Banard and Vacanti all had multi-hit games for the Jackrabbits, combing for eight of the team's 11 hits.
Tayler Baker gave up seven hits and three earned runs to take the loss for SDSU. Ava Kleinfeldt was the winning pitcher for St. Thomas.
Game Two
St. Thomas put up five runs over the first five innings, the first three of which were unearned. A two-run home run in the opening frame scored two Tommies, but came after a fielding error. A throwing error in the third made it 3-0.
Down 5-0 in the fifth, Vike knocked an infield single and
Bria Riebel scored from second base on a UST throwing error. St. Thomas added one run to its total in the final inning.
Vike had another multi-hit game, tallying three on four plate appearances. Madi Mangles was tagged as the losing pitcher. Ella Cook picked up the victory in the circle. Both pitchers went all seven innings.Â
