MANHATTAN, Kan. — South Dakota State was forced to play with a woman down for a majority of Sunday's match at Kansas State, and the Wildcats took advantage, as the host side earned a 2-0 victory over the Jackrabbits at Buser Family Park.Â
Â
The early going was played on fairly even terms. SDSU's
Zoe Wittkop produced the first shot of the match as her header sailed just high of the cross bar in the sixth minute.
Katelyn Beulke had a shot saved by K-State's Maddie Sibbing in the eighth minute before SDSU goalkeeper
Mallorie Benhart was forced to make her first save of the day in the 18th minute.Â
Â
The tale of the match shifted in the 20th minute. A misplayed pass back towards the Jackrabbit goal forced Benhart out of the box. The Wildcats' Allison Marshall had a clear path towards the net as Benhart charged towards her. Marshall worked to her right as Benhart advanced, eventually drawing an obstruction call which resulted in a red card given to Benhart.Â
Â
SDSU was forced to play the rest of the match with 10 players on the pitch.
Leah Bacon stepped in at goalkeeper for the rest of the game for the Jackrabbits.Â
Â
K-State struck first eight minutes later as a cross into the box saw Langley Mayers find the back of the net. The Jackrabbits battled for the final 17 minutes of the half to head into the break trailing 1-0. The Wildcats had a 9-3 edge in shots after 45 minutes, including a 3-1 edge in shots on goal.Â
Â
The Wildcats extended the lead to 2-0 with a Gabby DeMers goal in the 52nd minute. SDSU kept Kansas State off the board from there, holding the Wildcats to a season-low goal total.Â
Â
K-State finished the match with a 22-5 edge in shots and 8-1 advantage in shots on goal.Â
Â
South Dakota State picked up its first loss of the season, dropping to 3-1 on the year. Kansas State improved to 4-0.Â
