Background: A four-year standout for Lin-Marr High School … was twice named The Gazette-Area Player of the Year, the newspaper based out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa … as a senior selected as the KMA Boys Class 4A Player of the Year, Class 4A All-State and to the KMA Sports’ All-State Elite Team … a two-time Iowa Class 4A All-State First Team performer chosen by the IPSWA … earned back-to-back conference player of the year awards … as a senior set a school record, and metro area record, for points scored in career … finished with 1,778 points and passed Marcus Paige in the process … also became program’s all-time leading rebounder as well as record holder in blocked shots … senior season saw Kern average 22.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3.2 blocks per game … led Lin-Marr to Iowa Class 4A state tournament for first time in 13 years … advanced to semifinals that 2024-25 season and lost to eventual champion in overtime … a starter at Linn-Mar all four years of prep career … averaged 22.7 points and 8.9 rebounds as a junior … scored 19.5 points and logged 7.5 rebounds per contest as a sophomore … earned Third Team All-State recognition … averaged double digits in scoring as a freshman … shot over 50% from field and 40% from 3-point range year of prep career.
