South Dakota State head coach Brock Thompson announced on Friday, May 29, that Eric Bourdo has joined his coaching staff as an assistant.
Bourdo makes his way to Brookings after a three-year stretch as Dordt University’s head men’s soccer coach and a near decade spent in Sioux Center, Iowa, at Dordt.
“I’m pleased to welcome Eric, his wife Dallas, and their entire family to the Jackrabbit soccer program,” Thompson said. “I believe the experience he has put together at Dordt in all capacities can help elevate our team to another level. Eric will have the ability to step in and see things through a different lens than we’ve had, while he continues to develop in his coaching career.”
Bourdo has been in charge of Dordt’s men’s soccer team over the past three seasons. In his role, he has oversaw a program that consists of 60 players alongside one assistant coach. His head coach duties have also included a role in fundraising and alumni relations. He’s also served as an activities instructor for the university and an assistant director role of the American State Bank Sports Complex on campus.
Prior to taking over the head coach position, Bourdo served as an assistant for Dordt’s men’s and women’s soccer teams. He helped assist the Defenders’ soccer squads for four years focusing on team training sessions, completing scouting reports and serving as a recruit coordinator.
Bourdo began his coaching duties following a strong four-year college career. His first year of college was spent at Muskegon Community College where he started 17 of 18 matches as a freshman. He then spent the next three seasons at Dordt where he earned all-conference honors as both a junior and a senior playing as a defender. He was a team captain as a senior. Bourdo originally hails from Muskegon, Mich.
Bourdo holds both a bachelor’s degree, as well as a master’s degree in education, from Dordt.
