WASHINGTON, D.C. ? South Dakota State connected on all four of its penality kicks Friday afternoon to advance past Utah Valley State in semifinal action at the United Soccer Conference tournament.
With the score tied at zero following regulation and two overtime periods, South Dakota State's Chelsea Goosen, Natasha Swift, Kellyn Farrell and Jessica Heine all found the back of the net to advance the Jackrabbits into championship play on Sunday.
Utah Valley State's Jenni Wright scored UVSC's lone goal in the shootout. The Wolverines Courtney Robbins and Megan Berrett each missed their kicks to let the Jacks advance.
SDSU outshot Utah Valley State 18-13 in the match, including a 4-1 advantage in the second overtime.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Lograsso made eight stops on the day, while Kelley Thompson recorded five for the Wolverines. The shootout marked the first one in school history.
With the tie, the Jacks moved to 7-9-3 on the year, while Utah Valley State finished its season with a 8-11-1 record. The shutout marked the seventh time this season the Jackrabbits have held an opponent scoreless for a match and the 10th contest in 12 games SDSU has held an opponent off the scoreboard for a half. The 0-0 tie also marked the third double overtime match the Jacks have posted this fall.
South Dakota State will face North Dakota State Sunday at noon (ET) in the championship match at Greene Stadium in Washington, D.C. North Dakota State defeated IPFW, 1-0, on Friday afternoon. The Jacks fell to the Bison, 1-0, on Oct. 4.
