BROOKINGS, S.D. -- South Dakota State punched its ticket to the Summit League tournament semifinals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Omaha on Saturday afternoon at Fishback Soccer Park. The win propels the Jackrabbits (11-2-6) into a semifinal showdown against Denver in Tulsa, Okla., on Thursday.
The match's lone goal came early in the first half. SDSU freshman
Jenna Maloy headed in a shot on a cross from
Zoe Wittkop to give SDSU the advantage in the seventh minute. The goal marked Maloy's sixth of the season while Wittkop and Bosch registered assists on the play.Â
SDSU applied consistent offensive pressure and controlled the pace throughout the first half, firing 12 shots with four on target, while holding Omaha to just one attempt over the opening 45 minutes.
Early in the second half, Omaha's Payten Ivins tested the keeper with the Mavericks' first shot on goal, but SDSU's
Mallorie Benhart turned it aside to record her first of five second-half saves. Omaha sustained its offensive attack throughout the closing 45 minutes, but the Jacks were able to keep the clean sheet intact.
South Dakota State outshot Omaha by a 15-8 margin. The Jackrabbits also had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.Â
Omaha, which previously lost at SDSU on Oct. 12 during the regular season by a 3-1 score, saw its season end with a 6-9-4 record.
NOTES
- South Dakota State improved to 13-8-5 all-time against Omaha. The sides are 2-2-1 against one another in postseason play.
- SDSU advances to the conference tournament semifinals. It's the 13th consecutive semifinal appearance for the Jackrabbits in The Summit League Championship.
