BROOKINGS, S.D. - Kai Williams scored a career high 24 points, every Jackrabbit scored at least one point and South Dakota State snapped a five game losing streak on Saturday night in front of 2,530 fans at Frost Arena with an 82-67 win over Texas Pan-American.
The teams traded baskets to start the game, then the Jacks started a 16-2 run lasting 5 minutes and 34 seconds that ended with a 15-point Jackrabbit lead, a lead they would never relinquish.
A Dexter Shankle three-pointer ended the Jacks run and kicked off a 10-2 Broncs run that got them within seven points with just over six minutes left in the half.
Quickly regaining their composure, the Jacks outscored the Broncs 10-6 in those last six minutes of the half to take a 37-24 halftime lead.
South Dakota State committed only three first-half turnovers and shot 46.7 percent (14-of-30) from the field in the first half compared to Texas Pan-American, who committed five turnovers and went into the locker room shooting 29.2 percent (7-of-24).
SDSU came out after the half and wasted no time building on its lead, which got as high as 17-points and stayed higher than ten points for the majority of the second half until it ended with the final 15 point lead.
Williams played just 33 minutes and led all scorers with his career-high 24 points, but no two of those points came more dramatically than the two that topped his previous career-high of 17 points. With 11:05 left in the game, Garrett Callahan lobbed an inbound pass to Williams who caught it in mid-air and slammed it home to complete the alley-oop. Kai also added four rebounds before fouling out with 4:21 left to play.
Callahan finished the night with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including a 1-for-3 effort from three-point range. He made both of his free-throw attempts, dished out a game high five assists and grabbed four rebounds.
Michael Loney went 3-for-6 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line to finish with 12 points. Loney and Jose Frias both finished with a game-high six rebounds.
Matt Cadwell played just 32 minutes, but finished the game with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, 4-of-5 from the free-throw line.
The Jacks shot 66.7 percent (12-of-18) in the second half and finished the game with a season-high 54.2 shooting percentage (26-of-48), they also finished the game with a season-low nine turnovers.
The Broncs shot 60 percent (15-for-25) in the second half, but couple that with the 29.2 percent in the first half, and they finish the game shooting 44.9 percent (22-of-49).
Brian Burell led the Broncs with 14 points, Danny Puente added 13 and Julius Allgood ten in a losing effort.
The Jacks improve to 5-15 with the win, while the Broncs fall to .500 for the fist time this season with an even 10-10 record.
