The South Dakota State English riders placed third in the team standings on Saturday in Crookston, Minn., with 22 points, behind Wisconsin-Madison with 39 points and Wisconsin-River Falls with 24 points. Overall, riders from thirteen colleges competed at he competition.
Individually for the Jackrabbits, junior Laura Hoff won in Novice Equitation over Fences and finished second in Novice Equitation on the Flat, Section 2, another personal best.
Junior Katie Morris was another winner in Novice Equitation on the Flat, Section 3 on Saturday, followed by a win in Novice Fences, Section 3 on Sunday.
Sophomore Brittany Henry took the blue in Novice fences, Section 2 on Sunday. More than 30 Novice riders competed in the over fences and over 45 in the Novice flat.
“Our riders put together top performances this weekend in each division,” said SDSU head equestrian coach Megan McGee. “I am extremely proud of the effort from our English riders.”
The freshman class made a strong impact for SDSU during their first day of IHSA competition. Molly Ryan won the Intermediate Equitation on the Flat, section 2, Leslie Sauter finished second in the Intermediate Equitation over Fences, Section 2, and Rachael Fithian garnered a second place finish in Novice Equitation, Section 5. Ashley Marrin and Molly Ryan took first and second, respectively in the Intermediate Equitation, Section 2 during Sunday's show.
On Sunday, the Jacks won the team championship with 30 points, ahead of Wisconsin-Madison with 24 points. In a hotly contested battle, freshman Marian Michalson and junior Kaylee DeVries competed in a "ride-off" to determine the overall Individual Champion for the show.
After multiple testing phases instated by the judge to test their horsemanship skills and with the judge commenting publicly to the entire audience that this was a very close contest against these two riders, Marian Michalson was declared the show champion with Kaylee DeVries taking the Reserve Champion awards. Both riders won their respective fences and flat events during the day, prompting the ride-off, the equivalent of a "double overtime" in many other collegiate sports.
With her top placing from this past weekend, Kaylee became the fist SDSU rider to qualify for the IHSA Regional Championships in Madison, Wis., in April 2008. Kaylee's second place finish and then the win on Sunday put her individual point total for Intermediate Equitation over Fences at 40, with 35 points being necessary to qualify for the Championships.
SDSU dominated on Sunday in the fences divisions winning all five of the sections our riders entered. Other riders who won their fences classes include Molly Ryan, junior Katie Morris, and sophomore Brittany Henry.
Freshman Ashley Marrin captured her second win for the weekend in Intermediate Equitation on the Flat, Section 2.
