BROOKINGS, S.D. ? South Dakota State committed a season-low eight turnovers, dished out a season-high 21 assists and Ben Beran led three Jackrabbits in double-figures with 20 points, but Wisconsin Green-Bay failed to score on only one possession in the last nine minutes, which made the difference in the Phoenix 88-81 win on Saturday at Frost Arena.
The loss drops the Jacks to an even 3-3 entering Summit League play on Thursday at Centenary, while UWGB improves to 5-2 with the win.
Sophomore Kai Williams scored 17 points in the loss and sophomore Garret Callahan pitch in with 13 to round out the Jacks double-digit scorers.
Four Phoenix scored in double figures, led by Rahmon Fletcher, who scored a game-high 29 points off the bench on 12-of-14 (85.7 percent) shooting. Mike Schachtner finished with 19, Randy Berry with 13 and Troy Cotton with 12 in the win.
The Jacks took their first lead of the game just three and a half minutes into the contest on a three-pointer by true freshman Clint Sargent and steadily built it up to ten points at 37-27 with 4:22 remaining in the first half.
That lead vanished in a 13-2 run by UWGB, who took a 40-39 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The 13-2 run turned into a 16-2 run to start the second half, but the Jacks would work their way back into the game and, after six ties, take the lead at 62-59 on senior Michael Loney's second three-pointer of the night.
SDSU would stretch that lead to seven at 66-59, only to see the Phoenix come back and tie the score for the seventh time in the half with 7:04 to play on a quick 7-0 burst.
The Jacks kept pace down the stretch, but their only defensive stop the rest of the way came on a Williams steal and Lay-up.
Seven Phoenix free throws over the last 5:24 made-up the difference, and spoiled the Jacks bid for three straight wins.
The Jacks look to start a new streak on Thursday, when they open conference play at Centenary and then keep it going on Saturday at two-time defending conference champion Oral Roberts.
Tip-off for Thursday's game is schedule for 7 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. on Saturday.
