BROOKINGS, S.D. ? The South Dakota State men's basketball team showed the 1,010 fans who braved the blizzard outside what the future holds for the Jackrabbit program. On a night when the team honored its seniors, the freshman did most of the scoring, but not enough of it, as the Jacks came up on the short end of an 83-72 game on Thursday at Frost Arena against future Mid-Continent Conference opponent IPFW.
The Jackrabbits fell into a hole early, as the Mastodons opened the game on an 8-0 run, but two -minutes, and two Kai Williams layups later, the Jacks cut the lead in half.
A Michael Loney layup with 11 minutes, 21 second left cut the lead to two, but two IPFW three pointers and one IPFW layup over the next 40 seconds boosted the Mastodon lead to ten-points.
The Jacks quickly responded to the Mastodons' 8-0 run with an 8-0 run of their own.
Andy Kleinjan started the run with a three-pointer from the top of the key and Mark Engen scored the other five points with a layup and a baseline three.
But IPFW came right back with its third 8-0 run of the half to increase it lead back up to ten points, the same margin they took into the locker room at halftime.
Three point baskets made the difference going into the break. IPFW shot 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from beyond the arc in the first half, while the Jacks only connected on 22.2 percent (2-of-9) of their long balls, a difference of 21 points.
Undaunted, the Jacks scored the first five points of the second half to cut the ?Dons lead in half, but even after a pair of Garrett Callahan three-pointers cut the lead to three, and got the crowd back into the game, SDSU could not get any closer the rest of the night.
Callahan led the Jacks with 17 points, (five three-pointers and two free throws), to go along with his career-high eight rebounds.
Thomas Bassett scored a career high 14 points, pulled down seven rebounds and added two steals.
Kai Williams also finished with 14 points with three rebounds and three steals.
Jose Frias rounded out the Jacks double-digit scorers with 10 points, he also finished with eight rebounds and added to his team leading steal total with two.
Engen finished with a career high seven points to go along with his career high five rebounds.
DeWitt Scott led all scorers with 22 points, including a 6-for-9 effort from beyond the arc.
Jaraun Burrows scored 19 points and Quintin Carouthers added 10 in the win.
IPFW finished the game shooting 53.8 percent (28-of-52) from the field, 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from three-point range.
SDSU held the rebounding edge in the game, (42-to-27) but shot 39.7 percent (25-of-63) from the field, 33.3 percent (8-of-24) from three-point range.
IPFW, who wraps up it season on Saturday at North Dakota State, improves to 12-16 on the season, while the Jacks, who finish the season Saturday at home against New Jersey Tech, fall to 5-24.
Tip off at Frost Arena for the Jackrabbits final game is set for 7 p.m.
