SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Sophomore
Hillary Gerster tied for second individually and led the South Dakota State
women's golf team to a third-place finish on Tuesday at the Aztec Fall Classic,
hosted by San Diego State at the par-72, 6,072-yard Salt Creek Golf Club in
Chula Vista.
The Jacks, who entered the day in
second, carded a second-round 312 to finish at 621. Host San Diego State won
with a 618 (314-304) total, and first-round leader North Dakota State was
second at 619 (308-311).
After having four players break 80
on Monday, the Jacks had just two in the 70s on Tuesday.
Gerster (Andover, Minn.) fired her second consecutive 3-over-par 75 to finish in a tie for second at 6-over 150. North Dakota State's Amanda Miller won the event at 3-over 147 (74-73). First-round leader Linnel DeVilla, of CSU-San Marcos, tied for second with Gerster at 150 (73-77).
Sophomore Sydney Sturdevant (Sioux
Falls) moved up to 11th place. She shot 79-77 for a 156 total.
Freshman Rebecca Swords (Rosemount,
Minn.) faltered a bit on Day 2 and finished in a tie for 15th. After
an opening-round 76 (tie-sixth), she shot 82 to post 158.
Fellow-freshman Brittany Hanten
(Goodwin) fell into a tie for 17th at 159 (79-80).
Sophomore Whitney Schrader (Marshalltown,
Iowa) tied for 25th with a 163 (83-80) total.
The event featured seven teams and 37 individuals.
The Aztec Fall Classic was one of Gerster's best career finishes. She tied for first at the Cowgirl Classic (Wyoming) last season but had to settle for second after losing a scorecard playoff. Gerster is leading the team with a scoring average of 77.5.
South Dakota State wraps up the fall season at the Missouri Valley Fall Preview (Drake) in Penora, Iowa, on Oct. 20-21.
