South Dakota State went 1-1 last week in its first multigame homestand of the season to boost its home record to 3-2 heading into the Summit League home opener on Dec. 31, against Oral Roberts.
The Jackrabbits went 7-2 in league home games last season, but before they can turn their attention to the league home opener against the Golden Eagles, the Jacks need to keep their focus on the Minnesota Golden Gophers, who host the Jacks on Wednesday in Minneapolis for the fourth straight year and 12th time in the long history of both programs.
After struggling in a loss to Cal Poly last Tuesday in Brookings, the Jacks bounced back with an 80-72 win over Central Michigan on Saturday. Griffan Callahan scored a career-high 15 points to lead four Jackrabbits in double figures, including Dale Moss, who finished with 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Kai Williams and Nate Wolters both added 10 points in the win.
The Chippewas led by seven points early in the first half, but the Jacks kept their composure and worked their way back to tie the game three times before eventually taking the lead for good on a pair of Moss free throws with 9:20 left in the first half. The Jacks kept their foot on the gas, and used a 13-0 run to end the half that put them up 39-24 at the break. Central Michigan did get to within six points midway through the second half, but the Jacks quickly got the lead back into double digits and never allowed CMU to get closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Callahan continues to lead the Jackrabbit offense with 12.0 points per game and with 10 steals. Clint Sargent adds 10.2 points per game as the only other player to average in double figures. Williams averages 9.7 points and leads the team with 4.8 rebounds per game.
