Clint Sargent went 6-of-7 from the field and scored 19 points to lead South Dakota State to a come-from-behind win over Oral Roberts on Thursday in front of a New Year's Eve crowd of 1,510 at Frost Arena.
Oral Roberts, who beat No. 12 New Mexico in its last outing, falls to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in The Summit League. The Jackrabbits, who improve to 6-8 overall and 2-1 in The Summit League, never trailed by more than six points in the game, but trailed by that many with just over six minutes left in the game. Undaunted, the Jacks went on an 8-0 run and never trailed again.
"We've won a couple of games here, two out of the last three, where we've rebounded the ball really well and we played good defense and we've not been good offensively, 39 percent tonight and we won a basketball game," said SDSU head coach Scott Nagy. "I just think it's important that our players understand what wins games, it's defense, rebounding and physical play."
SDSU won the rebounding battle 47-29, including a 20-10 edge on the offensive glass, 10 of which came from senior Kai Williams, who became the first Jackrabbit to grab double-digit rebounds this season, leaving him two boards shy of cracking the top-10 in SDSU history in rebounds.
In addition to Sargent's 19 points, Nate Wolters added 14 points, including seven points in the final six minutes, five of which came from the free-throw line.
"He was driving and at the basket, he didn't play like a freshman tonight for sure," said Nagy. "And we needed that in the second half."
Wolters went 3-of-9 from the field on the night, but compensated with an 8-for-8 effort from the free-throw line. Garrett Callahan, who came off the bench for the first time in 52 games, rounded out the Jacks double-digit scorers with 12 points.
Niles Warren led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 14 points, Dominique Morrison scored 13 and Michael Craion 12 points in the loss.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Saturday, when they host Centenary in the back end of the Lamb Bonanza doubleheader at Frost Arena at 7:30 p.m.
The Gents (5-8, 1-2 Summit) fell to North Dakota State on Thursday in Fargo by the score of 82-70.
