The South Dakota State women's soccer team returns home to the friendly confines of Fishback Soccer Park to take on Horizon League member Wisconsin-Green Bay, Friday. A long Iowa roadtrip over the weekend left the Jackrabbits with a bad taste in their mouth and a 0-1-1 record.
The Jacks enter the game against the Phoenix with an 0-3-1 record but head coach Lang Wedemeyer feels his young team is making strides.
“The early part of the season has found us searching for a much-needed win,” said Wedemeyer. “ The ladies have battled hard in every game they have played and are getting better every week. We will have another stout test when we face UW-GB at home on Friday. They recently took Wisconsin to double overtime before succumbing to a late goal. So, it will be another good opportunity for us to show are mettle.”
Scouting Report: Wisconsin-Green Bay
Wisconsin-Green Bay is 1-1 on the young season. UW-GB lost to Wisconsin 1-0 2OT to open the season on Aug. 28 and capped the weekend with a 2-1 victory over Northern Iowa on Aug. 30. Corey Arno and Chelsea Lyons scored the two goals for the Phoenix.
SDSU played UNI this season in an exhibition matchup and won 1-0. The Jacks outshot UNI 18-7 including 4-1 in shots on-goal. UW-GB outshot the Panthers 15-6 and 7-2 on-goal.
The Horizon League member is picked to finish seventh this season in the conference preseason poll. They finished the 2008 season with a 5-7-4 record.
Last Week: Iowa State
The Jacks battled back from a 1-0 deficit against the Iowa State Cyclones and got on the board for the first time this season when Kayla Braffet redirected a cross from freshman Christa Nyblom to end the scoring at 1-all.
Brie Rogers got the nod in-net for the Jacks, allowing one goal and making six saves.
Iowa: Inexperience and lack of depth reared their ugly face Sunday at Iowa, as the Jacks dropped a 2-0 decision to the Hawkeyes.
SDSU kept the game even in the first half with the score knotted at zero. The Hawkeyes wore down the Jacks and scored two late goals in the 70th and 86th minutes to secure the win.
Rogers recorded four saves in the loss but gave up two goals, dropping the Jacks to 0-3-1 overall.
Jacks Picked Second: After an exhilarating run in the NCAA College Cup last season, the South Dakota State women's soccer team is picked to finish second in the Summit by the league's 10 head coaches.
For the fourth consecutive year, Oakland was selected as the preseason favorite with 72 points and two first-place votes. SDSU was a close second with 66 points and two first-place votes. IUPUI finished third with 65 points and a league leading four first-place votes. North Dakota State finished with one first-place vote and 59 points while Western Illinois rounded out the top five with one first-place vote and 54 points.
