The South Dakota State equestrian team opened its final home weekend of the season with a convincing 13-3 defeat of Sacred Heart on Saturday at the DeHaan Equestrian Center in Brookings.
The SDSU Western riders led the way with an 8-0 win, while the Jackrabbit English riders won by the score of 5-3.
Senior Kaylee Mundwiler and freshman Kelsey Champagne both finished with high-point rider honors in horsemanship, each posting scores of 74.5, with Champagne taking home MVP honors. Lydia Placzek paced the Jacks in reining with a score of 72.5, but Angela Gebhart earned MVP honors with a score of 70.
Sophomore Meredith Sauer posted an 87 in equitation on the flat to earn MVP honors, senior Sara Stirton scored an 85 in the same event, while sophomore Victoria Pecak picked up the Jacks third point on the flat.
Junior Ashley Marrin led the Jacks with an MVP performance in equitation over fences with a score of 80, but sophomore Meredith Sauer and freshman Megan Violand tallied the two SDSU points with rides of 68 and 74, respectively.
The Jackrabbit Western riders return to action again on Sunday against Sacred Heart, the SDSU English riders return to the ring on Feb. 13-14, with a competition at Wisconsin-River Falls.
