MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Tied at 69 with the clock winding down, South Dakota State sophomore Nate Wolters drained a three-pointer as time expired to lift the Jackrabbits to a 72-69 win over Central Michigan on Monday night in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
Wolters led the Jackrabbits, who improve to 8-3 heading into Thursday's game at Minnesota, with a game-high 25 points and a game-high six assists. Clint Sargent added 19 points in the win, while Chad White finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and added to his team lead with a career-high three blocks.
Jalin Thomas Finis Craddock led the Chippewas, who fall to 2-9, with 15 points each, Trey Zeigler added 10 points for CMU in the loss.
The Jacks scored the first four points in the game and minus an 8-all tie, SDSU led the entire fist half, and took a 37-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
"The first half, we left so many points out there. They could not score, they could not shoot the ball, we just couldn't rebound the basketball," SDSU head coach Scott Nagy said. "We allowed 12 offensive rebounds in the fist half, we should've been up 25 instead of 13. We let them back into the game in the first half, not the second half."
Central Michigan got back into the game by chipping away at the Jackrabbit lead until the Chippewas eventually forced the first of seven second-half ties at 52-52 with 8:10 left in the game, and then took their first lead on an Andre Coimbra layup with just over five minutes left.
Tied at 67 with 32 seconds left, Jordan Dykstra put back a Wolters miss for the fourth and final lead change, only to see CMU's William McClure tie the game at 69 with eight seconds left.
That set the stage for Wolters, who brought the ball down the floor and broke the final tie with a three pointer at the buzzer to lift the Jackrabbits to the win.
Wolters and the Jackrabbits return to action in their final non-conference game of the season on Thursday, when they travel to Minneapolis to take on the No. 20/21 ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers. The game from historic Williams Arena begins at 7 p.m., and can be seen on ESPN3.
