BROOKINGS - The South Dakota State men survived a cold first half Tuesday and started the second half with a 9-0 run as the Jackrabbits defeated Bellevue (Neb.) 63-53 at Frost Arena.
Sophomore guard Andy Kleinjan led the second-half surge by scoring all of his career-best 16 points after intermission. He hit 6 of 9 field goal attempts after halftime, including 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range.
The Jacks led 22-20 at halftime despite shooting just 21 percent from the field over the first 20 minutes.
But SDSU exploded quickly in the second half. Brady Hokenson opened the period with a 3-pointer, Steve Holdren scored on a drive, Hokenson hit a pair of free throws and Ben Beran scored inside, all in just 2 minutes.
The Jacks hit 16 of 29 field goal attempts in the final half.
Bellevue, which was NAIA Division II runner-up last year, closed within four at 35-31, but Kleinjan and Hokenson each hit a 3-pointer to put SDSU back up by 10.
Joe Green had 11 points and nine rebounds as the Jacks finished with a 47-37 margin on the boards.
Arthur Boults' 18 points led Bellevue (16-7).
SDSU (5-13) plays at Division I Arkansas State at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
