The South Dakota State women's soccer team is poised to keep the ball rolling into the conference portion of the schedule as the team travels to IPFW and Oakland this week.
“We are ready to start the Summit League schedule,” said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. “We have a lot of respect for the teams in our conference and know there will be some exciting games ahead.”
The Jacks closed the nonconference portion of the season with a 2-1 win over Big 12 school Iowa State. Kelsey Ferguson nailed a penalty kick to put the Jacks up 1-0 in the first half. Kayla Braffet's game-winner in the second half of the game gave the Jacks just what they needed to edge the Cyclones.
Danni Healy leads the team in points with eight. She is tied with Kayla Braffet in goals scored and game-winners with three and two, respectivley. Kaitlin Justice and Braffet lead the Jacks in shots with 26 each, while four Jacks are tied with two assists each in Cori Bonte, Courtney Higgins, Healy and Christa Nyblom.
Elisa Stamatakis earned her fifth win last week against Iowa State. She ups her record to 5-0-2. She allowed six goals so far this season for a 0.75 goal-against average and has 26 saves for a .812 save percentage.
Braffet Earns Weekly Summit League Honor – Kayla Braffet captures her first career Summit League Offensive Player of the Week after leading the South Dakota State women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Iowa State Sept. 24.
The junior from Carlock, Ill., collected a corner kick from Christa Nyblom in the 56th minute of the game to score the game-winner.
“It's great to see Kayla recognized for her game-winning goal against Iowa State. She has been dangerous in a lot of the games and we are looking for her to get on a roll in conference play,” said head coach Lang Wedemeyer.
Braffet is second on the team in points with seven off one assist and three goals this season, including two game-winners. She is tied with teammate Danni Healy for the most goals scored so far this season, as well as most game-winners scored. Braffet sits in a tie for third place on the all-time career assists list with 11 assists. She has 12 goals on her career, including four game-winners.
This week's Competition
IPFW Mastodons – IPFW, currently seventh in the league, starts the weekend with a 3-5-0 record, including 2-2-0 at home.
Lisa Underwood and Felicia Jones lead the Mastodons with three goals scored each. Jones and Arianne Mason both have seven points on the season, while Underwood has six.
Last season Underwood finished third overall in scoring with 24 points on the season and led the league in scoring with 17 points in Summit League play.
Goalkeeper Erin Naylor allowed 14 goals in the first half of the season for a goal-against average of 1.81. She tallied 42 saves for a save percentage of .750. She owns a 3-5-0 record and one shutout on the season.
The Jacks are 3-1 against the Mastodons all-time.
Oakland Golden Grizzlies – The Golden Grizzlies, currently fourth in the league, enter the weekend with a 4-4-1 record and 3-2-1 at home.
Sarah Lynch leads Oakland with 11 points scored on four goals and three assists. Nicole DeLuca has 10 points so far on four goals and two assists. The Grizzlies scored 28 goals in the first half of the season, compared to their oppenents' 12 goals.
Shannon Coley allowed 12 goals this season for a goal-against average of 1.42. She tallied 29 saves for a save percentage of .707.
Last season Oakland and the Jacks tied for the second-most goals scored in Summit League play with 19 goals. The Grizzlies also tied for third with SDSU in goals-allowed in Summit League games with 26 goals allowed.
Rabbits in the Record Books – Senior Kayla Braffet makes her way up the career assists all-time top-five list for SDSU. Braffet started the season in sixth place and currently sits in a tie for third with 11 career assists.
Senior Kaitlin Justice is currently in fourth place all-time in game-winning goals with seven on her career.
Freshman Elisa Stamatakis is already making her mark on Jackrabbit soccer. She tallied four-straight shutouts in her first five games as a Jackrabbit. The streak is a tie for second most consecutive shutouts in Jackrabbit history. Former goalkeeper Nicole Lograsso recorded four in 2007. Lograsso is also in first with eight consecutive shutouts recorded in 2008. Stamatakis stands in fourth place all-time with a save percentage of .812 and fifth place all-time with four total shutouts on her career. Goalkeeper Brienna Rogers is tied with Stamatakis with four shutouts on her career.
