Now fully entrenched in The Summit League schedule, South Dakota State hits the road this week for conference games at Western Illinois on Thursday and at IUPUI on Saturday, both games begin at 7 p.m. local time.
The Jacks split on this same road trip in 2009-10, the first two league games of the season, falling 79-57 at IUPUI, the eventual Summit League Tournament runner-ups, before downing Western Illinois 80-74, a historic win for the Jackrabbits. The win over WIU not only marked the Jacks first-ever Summit league road win after going winless on the road in two full seasons in the league, but it also marked the 1,300th win in the storied history of the South Dakota State men's basketball program.
The Jackrabbits return to action after splitting a Summit league weekend at home last week with an 86-62 win over Centenary on Thursday and a 90-82 loss to Oral Roberts on Thursday.
Four Jackrabbits scored in double figures in the win over the winless Gents, led by freshman Jordan Dykstra's 17 points. Dale Moss and Clint Sargent both scored 12 points, while Griffan Callahan finished with 10 points, as no SDSU player logged more than 22 minutes in the win.
Things got a little tougher for the Jackrabbits on Saturday against Oral Roberts, as the Golden Eagles came into Frost Arena and shook off the cold weather outside in a big way, shooting 65 percent from the floor in a 90-82 win. Add to that an 82 percent night from three-point range on 14-of-17 shooting, and ORU more than made up for the 32 points Wolters scored in leading the Jackrabbits. Sargent added 20 and Callahan 16 points, but a late Jackrabbit rally came up short against the red hot Golden Eagles.
Wolters leads the Jackrabbit offense through 16 games with 19.3 points per game, with 96 assists and with 23 steals. Sargent averages 15.9 points per game and adds 3.1 rebounds. Chad White averages 9.2 points per game, with 4.1 rebounds and a team-high 12 blocks, while Griffan Callahan adds 9.8 points and a team-high 5.3 rebounds per game. Callahan also leads the nation with a .976 free throw percentage, with just one miss in 41 shots from the charity stripe.
JACKS RECEIVING VOTES MID-MAJOR TOP 25 - For the first time in its short Division I history, the South Dakota State men's basketball team cracked the collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll, when the Jackrabbits debuted at No. 25 in the poll released on Nov. 22.
A week after debuting in the poll, the Jacks jumped eight spots to No. 17, where they remained for two weeks, but fell one spot in the poll released on Dec. 13, to No. 18, and then out of the poll to receiving votes in the last four polls.
JACKRABBITS AMONG THE NATION'S BEST - The Jackrabbits enter the week ranked 18th in the nation with 81.1 points per game and with 8.6 three pointers per game. The Jacks rank 14th in the nation with a 4.9 turnover margin, 12th with a 1.41 assist to turnover ratio, eighth with a 41.7 percent three-point field goal percentage and seventh with 10.9 turnovers per game.
Individually, Griffan Callahan's leads the nation with a .976 free throw percentage, while Nate Wolters ranks 18th in the nation with a 2.74 assists to turnover ratio and 17th with 6.0 assists per game.
CALLAHAN LEADS THE NATION - After starting the season with a perfect 28-for-28 mark from the charity stripe, Griffan Callahan finally missed a shot from the free throw line with a 1-for-2 effort at Western Michigan on Dec. 18. He responded by going 11-for-11 over the last six games and enters the week leading the nation with a .976 free throw percentage.
CLIMBING THE 1,000 POINT CLUB LADDER - Jackrabbit Senior Clint Sargent became the 41st member of the SDSU 1,000-Point Club on Feb. 25, 2010, in the Jacks 66-53 win over Western Illinois in Frost Arena.
Sargent started the season tied for 33rd on the all-time list with 1,035 points, but enters the week ranked 13th all-time with 1,290 points, 66 points shy of passing Dave Thomas (1,355 points from 1970-73) for 12th all-time and exactly 100 points away from cracking the top-10.
NAGY RAISING MONEY FOR HAITIAN RELIEF EFFORTS - Head coach Scott Nagy teamed up with Samaritan's Feet in each of the last two seasons to raise money and shoes for children in Haiti, a cause that really hits home for Nagy and his family, especially after a major earthquake shook the country on Jan. 12, 2010.
Already scheduled to coach in his bare feet on Jan. 23, 2010, against Oakland to raise money and shoes, the devastation in Haiti caused Nagy to shift his focus from shoes to earthquake relief, which worked to the tune of over $6,000.
Jackrabbit fans can play their part again in 2011, when Nagy coaches barefoot when the Jacks host IPFW on Jan. 22, in Frost Arena. Anyone interested in donating can simply text SHOES to 85944, which automatically adds $5 to your next phone bill. Donations from the 605 area code go specifically to help Nagy's cause.
