INDIANAPOLIS - The South Dakota State men led by as many as 14 points in the first half of Saturday's Summit League game at IUPUI, but the Jaguars scored 56 points on 76 percent shooting (23-of-30) in the second half to come back and down the Jackrabbits 81-76 in Indianapolis.
"You can't give up 56 points in the second half and think you're going win. If our team would ever decide that defense and rebounding is the most important thing, we could be very good. And if not, then we're going to feel like this," SDSU head coach Scott Nagy said. "It's not about offense, and it never will be. If we can make that change, and be focused on defense, we're going to be really good."
The loss drops the Jacks to 12-6 overall and 4-3 in Summit League play, while IUPUI improves to 11-9 overall and 5-2 in league play.
Nate Wolters led the Jackrabbits with 24 points; Clint Sargent scored 17 and Jordan Dykstra 10 points in the loss. Dykstra led all players with nine rebounds, one shy of his first-career double-double.
Alex Young led the Jaguars with 27 points. Leroy Nobles added 21 and Christian Siakam 12 points in the win.
Dale Moss opened the scoring with his only three points of the game, and the Jackrabbits slowly built a first half lead that reached 14 points at 32-18 with 3:56 left to play in the first half.
The Jacks led by nine at 34-25 at the half, and boosted that lead to 11 early in the second half before Young heated up, and scored 22 of his game-high 27 points in the second half.
Despite the hot shooting Jags, the Jacks held onto the lead until Young broke a 66-all tie and put the Jags up for good with 2:31 left on the clock.
IUPUI would increase its lead to as many as six, but the Jacks trailed by just three with a chance late, until a Young steal and dunk in the final seconds sealed the win for the Jaguars.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Thursday, when they welcome conference favorite and frontrunner Oakland to Frost Arena at 7 p.m.
