LOGAN, Utah – George Marshall scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds in his South Dakota State debut, Connor Devine scored a career-high 13 and the Jackrabbits got 17 Points from Cody Larson and 15 from Deondre Parks, but need overtime to secure a 75-72 win over Idaho State in the first game of the World Vision Classic in Logan, Utah.
The Jacks fifth straight win boosts their record to 7-3, while the Bengals fall to 3-6.
“We need to practice better. We've not practiced well for whatever reason, and it's showing up in the way that we played,” head coach Scott Nagy said. “It's hard for us to enjoy wins when we know we're not playing like we're capable of playing.”
Down four at 60-56 under two minutes to play, the Jacks got buckets from Devine and Parks, but the Bengals got one as well, so SDSU trailed buy two with under a minute to play, when Jake Bittle drew a foul with 47 seconds left and sank both free throws to tie the game for the 10th time, this time at 60-all.
ISU would get a look on the other end with 14 seconds left, but missed, giving SDSU a chance to win it in regulation, but a Marshall triple and a Devine put-back attempt fell short, sending the game to overtime.
Parks opened the extra frame with a 3-pointer, and the Jacks pushed that lead to as many as seven at 70-63 with 1:18 left, but the Bengals fought back to within one at 73-72 with five seconds left, but Marshall sank a pair of free throws with three seconds left and Idaho State's 3-point attempt at the final buzzer fell short.
Idaho State's Jeffrey Solarin led all players in the game with both 22 points and with 10 rebounds, and Chris Hansen scored 21 points in the loss for the Bengals.
The Jackrabbits look to extend the streak on Friday against Bakersfield at 5:30 p.m. MT, 6:30 p.m. CT.
