OMAHA – South Dakota State briefly stumbled out of the gate on Saturday at Omaha, but quickly regained its composure, and eventually ran away with an 87-68 win behind career nights from both George Marshall and Reed Tellinghuisen.
The Jackrabbits improve to 11-7 overall with the win and even their Summit League mark at 2-2. The Mavericks fall to 7-9 overall and to 1-3 in league play.
“About the first five minutes of the game, our defense was not very good. I think they're first 13 points, nine of them were off the break, either layups or fouls,” head coach Scott Nagy said. “The way Omaha plays, we can't simulate it in practice. They play fast, but I feel like we made the adjustment, and then we started guarding, and that's what's winning games for us.”
Those first five minutes of the game saw all five tie scores and all six of the lead changes before the Jackrabbits took the lead for good at 16-13 on one of Tellinghuisen's career-high five 3-pointers with 13 minutes, 49 seconds left in the first half.
The Mavs cut the lead down to one three times in the half before the Jackrabbits took a 41-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Up 11 at 59-48 with 10:55 left in the game, the Jacks put the game away with a 10-0 run that pushed the lead to 21 with just under eight minutes to play. SDSU led by 22 when the Mavs tried to mount one last comeback, but the Jackrabbits stifled the effort and pushed the lead back to 20 with 34 seconds left on Tellinghuisen's fifth triple of the game.
Marshall led all players in the game with a career-high 25 points, which included a career-high five 3-pointers. Tellinghuisen scored a career-high 19 points, with Deondre Parks adding 18 and Cody Larson 11 points in the win. Parks also led the Jacks with three steals.
Keaton Moffitt and Lane Severyn both recorded career-highs for rebounds; Moffitt with a team-high nine to go with his four points and Severyn with eight rebounds to go with his five points.
Tre'Shawn Thurman and Jake White led the Mavs in the loss with 12 points each, with both Mike Rostampour and Marcus Tyus adding 11 points. Rostampour also finished with a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Jacks look to make it three in a row on Wednesday, when they start a season-long three game homestand against IUPUI. The Jacks and Jags tip at 7 p.m.
