ST.PETERSBURG, Fla. – The South Dakota State University women's swimming and diving team finished in a tie for second place, while the Jackrabbit men dropped a decision to Iowa during competition Saturday at the 2015 St. Pete's Classic.
Iowa claimed all nine relays in both the men's and women's divisions to sweep the competition. The Hawkeye women tallied 126 points, followed by both SDSU and UALR with 80 points. Sacred Heart (Conn.) closed out the four-team standings with 50 points.
The Jackrabbits' 3x100-yard breaststroke relay team posted a runner-up finish for the top showing by SDSU. The trio of Emily Campbell, Kristin Erf and Kayce Smith combined for a time of 3 minutes, 27.40 seconds.
Also turning in top-three performances were the 3x100 backstroke and 3x500 freestyle scramble relay teams. The trio of Cassie Hendricks, Sam Prasher and Hadlie Overhue, placed third in the backstroke relay with a time of 3:08.16, while Julia Bodnaruk, Elizabeth Buchholz and Kendra Hinton teamed for a time of 5:55.85.
The Jackrabbit men recorded two runner-up finishes in falling 126-90 to the Hawkeyes. SDSU's 3x100 breaststroke relay team of Josh DeDina, John Overman and Geoffrey Longhurst clocked a runner-up time of 3:08.52, with the Jackrabbit trio of Chris Angerhofer, Blake Yeager and Weston Christensen adding a runner-up time of 5:08.46 in the 3x500 scramble relay.
SDSU closed the day with a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay as the quartet of Alex McLain, Overman, Garth Wadsworth and Daniel Jacobson clocked a time of 1:37.63.
Both Jackrabbit squads return to action Jan. 17 by hosting St. Cloud State (Minn.) in dual action.
