MARTIN, Tenn. – The South Dakota State equestrian team returned to action after a three week layoff on Friday at UT-Martin, but fell to the host Skyhawks 10-6 in the first of two weekend meets.
The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 5-6 on the season, while UT-Martin improves to 6-7.
“We didn't have the strong performances we needed in fences, but we did get some strong rides in horsemanship, flat and reining,” head coach Megan Rossiter said. “We need a complete performance tomorrow and we'll be fine.”
Freshman Mariah Wright took home the lone MOP award on the day with her score of 68 in reining, where the Jacks took three of the four points. Wright's fifth MOP of the season gives her an 8-2-1 mark on the season to lead the SDSU reiners.
The other reining points came from Raivenne Scott, who improved to 6-4 with a score of 67, while Miranda Sullivan moves to 5-2-3 with her score of 67.5.
The Jacks other two western points came in horsemanship, where both Kelsey Swainston and Angela Lopez won their point. Swainston's 71.5 gives her a 6-4-1 record, while Lopez improves to 2-1.
Jessica Andronowitz scored the lone hunt seat point, carding a 78 on the flat to improve to 4-6.
SDSU looks to get back in the win column on Saturday, when they take on Sacred Heart in Martin, Tenn., at 10 a.m.
