LINCOLN, Nebraska -- South Dakota State women's soccer saw its season come to an end Friday night in the first round of the NCAA tournament, not advancing in penalty kicks after earning a scoreless draw at Nebraska.
Playing in front of a crowd of 1,257 people, the Jacks (10-7-4) found themselves in their third consecutive shootout, but after claiming the previous two, saw Nebraska advance in the tournament with a 3-0 penalty kick advantage.
Even throughout the entire 110 minutes of regulation and over time periods, the contest was filled with crisp ball movement and momentum swings from both teams on the pitch.
Nicole Hatcher,
Tori Poole and
Annie Williams were the only Jackrabbits to have shots on goal throughout the game.
Â
Late in the second half, SDSU came close to taking a lead in regulation but a diving save by the Huskers kept things even. In the 78th minute, Williams took a shot that was deflected, and a follow up from Poole was gathered once again by the keeper.
Â
Maggie Smither posted her second straight shutout in net, capturing six saves on the day.
Â
The Jackrabbits continued their energy through double overtime as the game remained scoreless. Hatcher, Williams and
Ashley Adams made attempts during the shootout, but each were either saved or shot wide.
Â
Head Coach Lang Wedemeyer
On third-consecutive shootout…
"We felt confident after having two of those in our conference tournament, but there's also the fear of how much luck is left for something like that. There were definitely mixed emotions at that point."
Â
Last year's game against Minnesota vs. today's game…
"Minnesota really took it to us and Nebraska certainly has a quality program, but the fact that we held them scoreless and played with them for portions of the game, we feel a lot better obviously, but there's still the pain of your season ending."
Â
Slowing down Nebraska's offense…
"It was hard to slow them down, they're so fast and so athletic, but I thought what we did tonight was very much a team effort and you can't stop people like Jaycie Johnson individually. It has to be a collective effort and I thought we did a great job getting extra numbers around the ball and if it wasn't the first person who was able to win it, it was often the second or third."
