South Dakota State women's soccer overcame wet field conditions and a stingy Omaha defense Friday to win its fourth consecutive game, claiming a 1-0 victory at Fishback Soccer Park thanks to a late goal from
Jennie Scislow.
Â
SDSU (6-4-3, 2-0 Summit League) put constant pressure on the Maverick defense with a 20-2 shot advantage, but was unable to break through until the 80th minute of action when
Leah Manuleleua found Scislow sprinting down the middle of the field. After drawing the Omaha keeper out of the net, Scislow's shot slipped past the defense and into the lower left corner of the net.
Â
"I thought we played really good soccer on a field that was tough to play on," head coach
Brock Thompson said. "What I'm most proud of is that our midfielders added to our attack tonight, and it was fitting that a midfielder scored the goal for us."
Â
Scislow netted her first goal of the season to lead the offense, while Manuleleua recorded assist No. 2 for the season. Both Jackrabbits had four shots in the game, trailing only
Tori Poole (six shots) for the team-lead in attempts.
Â
Maggie Smither started between the pipes and tallied one save.
Â
Omaha began the game with a sprint towards the Jackrabbit goal, but after Mavericks' initial shot went wide, State took back the momentum and controlled the game the rest of the way.
Â
Poole nearly gave SDSU the lead early when her first shot of the day skipped just wide of the net in the fifth, and over the next 15 minutes of game action the Jacks continued to pound the ball into the box, only to have their attacks thwarted by the Mavericks.
Â
With less than 20 minutes to go in regulation, Poole again came up inches shy of the game's first goal, hitting a ball from the right side of the box that looked true, only to be tipped above the crossbar at the last moment by Omaha's Haley Johnson.
Â
In the 80th, SDSU took possession in the midfield after Omaha attempted a counter attack, and Manuleleua flicked it to Scislow to set up the eventual game-winner.
Â
Omaha looked for a quick answer with a shot on the ensuing possession, but Smither stopped the equalizer and the Jackrabbit defense clamped down the rest of the way.
