The South Dakota State women's golf team opens March with its toughest tournament of the season, the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Florida, Monday through Wednesday.
The three-day event hosted by Miami features two teams ranked in the top 20 and three in the top 50, according to Golfstat rankings. Additionally, Barry University is ranked fifth nationally in Division II.
The 54-hole event takes place at the Biltmore Golf Course, a par-72, 6,150-yard course. Teams play 18 holes each day with 8:30 a.m. tee times Monday and Tuesday and a 9 a.m. shotgun start Wednesday.
The 13-team field includes: No. 17 Oklahoma, No. 24 Miami, No. 46 Virginia Tech, Barry, Coastal Carolina, Florida International, Kentucky, Maryland, Mercer, Middle Tennessee State, Penn State and South Florida.
The Jackrabbits are coming off a seventh-place finish at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona. The Jackrabbits shot a final round 300 (313-307-300=920) on the par-72, 6,110-yard GCU Golf Course.
Summit League Player of the Week,
Cassidy Laidlaw, led State by firing a 226 (77-75-74) to tie for 19
th and
Sydney Bormann tied for 23
rd (78-73-77=228).
Teresa Toscano leads the Jackrabbits with a 73.67 stroke average and ranks fourth in The Summit League. Laidlaw sports a 75.22 average and ranks eighth.
The Jackrabbits have a 300.5 stroke average, which ranks third in The Summit League.
Last year at the Hurricane Invitational, South Dakota State jumped five spots in the final round and broke the school record for 18 holes to finish 10
th. State shot a five-under par 283. Toscano tied for 48th (79-76-71=226) and Bormann tied for 65
th (77-77-79=233).
